New shaman - question re elemental buildFollow

#1 Aug 26 2009 at 11:05 AM Rating: Decent
I'm a new player, rolled a Shaman, just hit level 10 and have a question about the order in which I should allocate my talent points. I want to go elemental to level up. For now I will level mostly solo and PvE, but when I hit the level where I can do instances in a group I would like to do as much of that as possible, both for the gear and to get a better sense of how to play a shaman in a group.

With the above in mind, I'd appreciate any thoughts on the best order in which to allocate tier 1 points for an elemental build? I've looked around and found several examples of elemental builds. They all seem to have the following tier 1 talents in common:
* 5/5 convection
* 5/5 concussion
* 5/5 ancestral knowledge

Some also allocate 3/3 to enhancing totems.

In light of what I'm looking to do, which method of allocating points would be best for the next several levels (up to level 20 or so)?
* Spread out the points among all of the tier 1 talents as I level up (e.g., when I reach level 10 put a point in concussion, at level 11 put a point in convection, and so on like that at each level until I max each of the tier 1 talents); or
* At each level max the points in one talent (e.g., at each of levels 10 to 14 put 1 point into concussion) and then move on to the next talent and max that one out (e.g., after putting all 5 possible points in concussion then move to convection and do all 5 points)?

If the latter, in what order should I max out each talent?

Any suggestions, advice, opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No no, NO.

Do not spread your points out between all three or even two trees as you go. First mistake new players make. Spend it all in one tree.

In the case of Elemental, I'm not sure. Convection and Concussion are pretty equal. Whatever you'd like, but go 5/5 for maximum efficiency. After the first tier you could go for Call of Flames if you tend to like to use Searing Totem. Natural Warding and Elemental Devastation aren't so great, maybe even get both 5/5's at the top, or 3/3 Call of Flames then put 2 into whichever on top isn't 5/5.

And Shaman's in a group ---> 1. Do your job. DPS should be DPS'ing, but if someone is dying throw a Lesser Healing Wave or two. Healers just heal. 2. Put down totems that give the most benefit to your group.

Thanks for your post. So if I understand you are saying that even though each build will have some (but not many) talents from another tree (e.g., elemental build might include some talents from enhancement tree) there I should go deep into the build I've chosen before going back and grabbing some of the skills from another tree. So I should use what looks like a widely agreed upon elemental build for PvE and keep going down into that tree for now. Thanks!

If you're looking at level 80 maximum DPS builds (aka raiding), don't be afraid to switch it up. Leveling is different than raiding, so the specs can be different. One major thing I can think of is Improved Fire Nova - bad for raiding, good for solo, a stun is really nice.

Also yes, pretty much. After you get all 51, 53, 55, however many points you want into Elemental, then dip into Enhancement. The good stuff for any spec is mostly at the bottom, the tops are just smaller things which can be included by different trees for bonus.

Yea, full list here.

And according to some infamous OOT'ers, there are even more that aren't on the list! Smiley: sly

I guess this will be on top for awhile, until someone makes a new thread...man it moves slow in here.

It does move slow in here. I sort of want them to change shaman in some way that will shake things up a bit.

Also a new shaman. Just wondering about the downtime of Ele Shams while lvling. I have a lock at 55 that I drain tanked the whole way, little down time but terribly boring, and I have a 20 Priest who goes OOM after 4 kills. Is the average downtime of Ele sham along the lines of my Priest or is it better than that?

Also I suppose my Shammie CAN melee unlike my Priest who is completely spell reliant, easing up on mana use. If it's going to turn out like my Priest then I'll lvl Enh, but I've already lvled my War and DK up to 60 (yes I have bad altitis) and want a change from meleeing.

Thanks :)

Enhancement is the most popular leveling spec because you basically never stop. Maybe at low levels, but once you get Water Shield around 30, Ele or Enh doesn't stop much at all.

Enhancement is nice because you still deal decent damage without any mana, because of yours white hits/weapon enchants, the only problem is managing mana. Spending it on totems, DPS or heals. Once you get deeper into the tree though you get several major things for saving mana, and Enh is pretty much non-stop after about 60.

Elemental is very nice, just a bit more problems with mana than Enh has. Water Shield is again very essential. I leveled 70-80 as Elemental and had no problems with mana, so I'm thinking it would be mostly fine.

Overall? Enh, it's faster leveling. But if you like casting, go for Ele, it only lags behind a bit.
