I've just come back to WoW from a long break, and I know what you mean about Lava Lash. I was always wishing for more moves to blow GCDs on, but Lava Lash seems like one too many (though I'm thrilled to bits with Maelstrom Weapon). With a glance at EJ's and a bit of practice you get the hang of it though.
Basically, Lava Lash is the button you push only when there is F-All else to press. Don't feel guilty about not pushing that button if you have anything better to do; it's bottom of the priority list.
As for specs, aim for
this at level 60. Ignore Enhancing Totems and Improved Windfury Totem for the time being; when you're leveling/questing, most fights are over too quickly to justify the GCD to drop totems. At 61+ go into the Elemental tree up until Elemental Fury (picking up Elemental Devestation along the way of course).
I picked up Convection instead of Concussion because I thought efficiency would be the most important thing for leveling, but I've realised this was a mistake. I've not been out of mana since I installed WotLK, and I've hardly touched Shamanistic Rage. Often I've found myself spending Maelstrom procs on Chain Lightning rather than Lightning Bolt even on a single target, despite it costing three times as much mana and doing slightly less damage, simply because it looks slightly cooler. Elemental Focus would be a total waste, incase you're wondering.
I've not tried Static Shock yet; I've heard this is more of a raiding talent, that you would have trouble supporting solo or in a small group, but I find it hard to imagine anything making a Enhancement Shaman OOM with the way things are set up at the moment.
