Leveling Priest...Follow

#1 Aug 24 2009 at 1:35 PM Rating: Decent
I hear at 40 Shadow is the way to go but I ended up respecing to Holy because I don't cast -any- shadow spells. No PW:P, no Plague... Holy Fire -> Smite -> Smite -> Smite(with Glyph for extra dmg!)

My question is simple, I am unsure on stat priorities while leveling. I noticed hit is VERY important to Priest because I had the most abysmal fights against Orange level mobs.

My character is not showing up on Armory, I don't know why :/

The name is Daphni on Alleria.

As it stands I have ~120 SP but my wonder is, how important is Spirit and Int? I chose a pair of legging that give +5stam +10spir, +8sp over +15int +5crit due to thinking SP = win, but I don't know.

Any advice would be great. At 40 I WILL be Dual Spec and do Shadow for leveling. Glyph advice is welcome also, currently using Smite and PW:Shield.

First, even if leveling Holy, I suggest Spirit Tap in your build so you won't have down time.

Stat wise, at lower levels I would not bother much with Spellpower. Int, then Spi, then Stamina, is my opinion. Once you get into the Outland and gear gets better, Spellpower becomes king. Intellect and Spirit continue to be important, as is Crit (great regen stat if you're still Holy at that point). Obviously you always want enough Stamina to live.

Forgot to add: I like the glyphs you chose for what you're doing. I know minor glyphs are generally stupid, but the levitate one is also really convenient.

Thanks a lot :) I am using 3 in Spirit Tap currently, and I have the levitate glyph!

Thanks for the advice :D

Int increases the size of your mana pool....good thing for casters
spirt increases the amount of mana re-gen during combat
stam increases your health pool
These are what you want while PRE outlands as a priest, in that order

once you get to outlands, SP, crit, hit, and MP5 are your new friends. (not in that order, and in addition to Int, Spirt, and Stam

i could be off here a little, i dont yet have a priest to max level so i am still learning myself.

It took me a while to find what worked for me as a priest. I too heard shadow was the way to go -- still cant seem to grasp it :P

I leveled 1-40 respecing a lot (at lvl 40 my respec to try shadow again was over 50g!) at 41 i gave up on shadow. I levled 41-79 (soon to be 80) as pure Disc (except 3 in spirit tap)

I love my shield and nuke technique. my current rotation is the shadow nuke, holy fire, shield, smite, nuke, HF - wand & cleanup corpses

Really, you just need to find the play that fits you -- priest allows 3 completely different types :)

as far as stats they got it right on.

for pre BC I would stack Intel first. this gives you a larger mana pool, and higher crit% then spirit/ stam -- they just keep you going longer w/ less downtime :)
spellpower is nice, but you wont find great gains on old world items

once you hit hellfire (at 58) don't scrap intel, spirit, or stam but start adding Spellpower, & crit without sacraficing gains in intel (manapool is essential!)

Long before they hugely they improved this talent it was a must 5 point grab. The new Spirit Tap (by new I mean Lich King...tells you how long its been since I played a priest) is utterly amazing.

Holy or Shadow or Disc. If you're leveling and mainly by yourself Spirit Tap will make sure you keep going. Its a necessary 3 talent points that'll keep you going pull after pull without needing to drink.

I'm debating leveling as Holy. Having reached 80 or near 80 on a plethora of characters. I wanted to try healing out as a priest. My main is a respectably geared holy paladin and all of the toys holy priests get and the multiple target healing sounds like a really fun change in pace. But I'm unsure if I want to give up leveling speed of shadow for playing holy. I plan on grouping up with a friend so I might respec to holy after I catch up with him.

I'm leveling with my husband and I'm going "Disc" for that. I put the Disc in quotes because right now I have more points in Holy while getting down to the Smightiness. Any spec would work and Shadow would probably still be more efficient, but I figured I'd do this for fun, ease of healing him, plus better mana efficiency in BG's.

I still took Spirit Tap. I find it kicks in every three kills or so and combined with Meditation that's just enough to keep me from ever having to drink. Mostly all I cast is Shield/Renew and Holy Fire, with the occasional SW:P or Smite. Between dots, shields and heals you can take on an almost unlimited number of mobs with the right partner. I stress almost unlimited, because when he leaped down off a wall into a bunch of trolls and pulled, I kid you not, well over a dozen (I hate flee-pulling mobs), that was our only PVE related death so far.

With instant shields (soul warding), more mana, and penance as the end talent, disc is a fun healing spec. I'd definately consider it if not leveling shadow.

There's a second, very sweet, benefit to getting Spirit Tap as a leveling smiter priest.

Spiritual Guidance.

With my 313 spirit selfbuffed, that's an additional 78.25 Spellpower when Spirit Tap is up and while chain pulling I know I could/can keep Spirit Tap up for minutes before I start running low on mana.

I find priests at lower levels as many do and that is dam hard at times , as others have said spirit tap is a must have and you can try an experiment as i did with stat food and i found that the extra stamina and even more so spirit does help especially if you run out of mana and i know my new priest is only level 18 but with spirit and intellect boosted a bit hardly ever runs out of of mana enough to need to drink.

The fact is although i can take on mobs 1 or 2 levels higher without a real problem i find it so slow going as i usually need to drink that i usually take on mobs around 1-2 levels lower as i can kill 2 mobs in the time it takes to kill a higher level mob which equals more experience , my way is MB SW pain and then wand mob to death and if its more than one mob and the area is not crowded a scream is always a fun way to get breathing space and if that mob brings back a friend it is usually ok and will allow you to be constantly killing but i would not recommend it where higher level crowds are as if you are like me you will run out of mana.

Intellect = crit hit chance + mana so you really need a mix of int and spellpower plus to help regenerate your mana some spirit has to be worth using even if its just by the food stats , my guessing is unless others can say otherwise i would roughly go with equal parts int,sp, spirit and stamina and as it is only for levelling it makes little difference as you will be changing gear quite a lot and so i would say do not worry to much just try and get what is needed and if you are needing to drink a lot then spirit and intellect will help and make sure you get a decent wand at least at lower levels as that always help save mana.

edited to say wow i had not noticed that spell at level 30 so thanks for pointing it out as it proves spirit is a must have at level 30 unlike what i did last time i tried to level a priest.
