From MMO-Champion there are a few changes coming our way, and 1 is the end of Prot healing as we know it:

Quote:
Paladin

* Righteous Fury: The bonus threat from Holy spells caused by this talent has been reduced from 90% to 80%.

Talents

* Judgements of the Just: The reduction in cooldown to Hammer of Justice provided by this talent has been reduced to 5/10 seconds instead of 10/20 seconds.
* Touched by the Light: This talent now provides 20/40/60% of the paladin’s strength as spell power instead of 10/20/30% of the paladin’s stamina.

Retribution

* Seal of Command: This ability now chains to strike up to 2 additional targets when it is triggered by an attack.

Also, SoC buffed. You think Blizz was unhappy about it being totally useless? ;)

Yeahm, and the ret change sort of makes sense--pretty sure the intent was for command to be the multi-target seal and vengeance to be the single-target, so making in do additional damage to nearby mobs is reasonable. Does command proc on divine storm? will each of those four hits proc twice more? hmmm. Of course, they could have also managed this by making SotP affect all seals, not just SoR and SoV.

Thanks for pointing out the reason for the prot change. I only do prot and ret, and couldn't for the life of me figure out why they were making an effectively neutral change to the talent :)

Interesting change - should mean that Prot Paladins can still have decent SP in prot gear, but not the obscene amounts they were getting by double-dipping with spellpower plate.

I LIKE this change. It still neuters the "burst" capability of SoC for PVP, but adds a lot of damage for trash packs in PVE (especially, for example, with DS).

I could potentially see Ret changing Seals much more often with this patch.

Trash pack - SoC
Single target trash - SoR
Boss - SoV (with possible switches if there are different phases)

I think it will add more nuance to the Ret class, and make seal choice further separate the "good" from the "bad" Rets.

I agree. I'm even switching out my libram for the Divine storm boost one on trash packs. I havent tied it to my seal yet as a macro but I might go that route. For now I just made an extra set of gear in Item rack one Ret Boss, and the other Ret Trash.

I did just barely remember to switch back to the Valiance libram in time for Mimiron 25 last night though so it will take some mental adjustment for it to be routine.

IF (and it's a big if because the damage from this on trash would be absolutely bananas) SoC procs from divine storm i guess i'll just remove a point from somewhere in prot to grab command again. I somehow doubt it will, because in the same patch Fan of Knives (the best AoE ability in the game) is being nerfed by 30%.

edit: Apparently this is exactly how it works on the ptr. 4 targets? 4 SoC hits on each. Command could potentially be the new "go to" cleave ability for 3s and 5s in the arena.

Totally nuts. I hope I get to play with it a bit before they realize it's broken.

I had an extra point in my 5/11/55 build anyway that I threw in vindication for soloing stuff like Threat from Above, ( God I love soloing that while a group of 2-3 squishies stands around waiting for their 4th)

Guess I'll be throwing that point in SoC.

Just to straighten things out (since I made the first comment to this effect):

Apparently, the chaining on SoC will only proc on single-target attacks. So Divine Storm will not proc it (or should not, based on what GC is saying).

An update to the minor patch that is incoming:

Quote:
Protection

* Blessing of Sanctuary: This blessing now grants 10% strength in addition to its current effects. Also, the strength and stamina bonuses from this blessing will no longer be lost when Blessing of Kings is removed.

Anyone else thinking that eventually Sanc will have everything Kings does and Kings will be yet another spell to go the way of the dodo?
#12 Aug 26 2009 at 2:24 PM Rating: Decent
I wouldn't think so since they moved kings to general training rather than through a tree because most paladins got it or tried to get it since it is often the blessing of choice for many, whereas Sanctuary is the domain of a tankadin.

Unless, of course, they will try to use that as a reason to make prots more valuable (unlikely since tanks are always highly sought) or sanctuary becomes a general item as well? Still, it wouldn't provide the same boost of + to all stats that kings does.

There is supposed to be a revamp of all talents in the Cataclysm expansion so maybe they will consolidate some redundant/semi-redundant talents as well as moving the passive ones?

That's kinda where my "fear" for lack of a better term is aimed. They could easily say, "You know, Kings and Sanc are getting too close to the same spell, let's just merge them ..." Not saying it will happen, but that's definitely something Blizzard could do. Similar to how they consolidated various Shaman Totems.

Thing is, that would basically make Prot Paladins mandatory, or they'd have to baseline to consolidated Kings' Sanctuary (c wut i did thar?) to keep in line with their "bring the player, not the class" mentality.

I think we're going to see something in the future where Sanctuary is removed as its own blessing, and instead repalced by a talent in prot tree that makes kings function in addition to 10% stat change, provide the current damage and mana restoration functionality as our current blessing of sanctuary. Another alternative would be to put the mana/damage reduction ability of sanctuary in improved righteous fury.

Personally, I would *prefer* one of these options.
