Soloing elites when immune to rootFollow

Hi there,

Call it being spoiled, but on my (now retired) warlock I could solo elites if I was outdoors with fear. My hunter could take on elites with relative ease. My death knight has very little trouble with elites. My druid can smoke an elite most of the time unless they're immune to root. Some of them I've still managed to take down by stunning and popping off a bunch of heals. But that is not a reliable way to be victorious. For instance, it didn't work last night in Howling Fjord against the elite runed giants (level 70-71). My druid is currently 73.

Should I generally avoid elites if they're immune to root, or do others have tips to share? Bear in mind that gear plays a huge part in this, and I understand that. I'm more interested in how you would go about taking down an elite mob (knowing it is immune to root since you can test that and run away) assuming instance and quest gear. I'm more interested in feral approaches rather than boomkin approaches, but please share your boomkin tips as well so others might benefit.

Thanks!

Well back when I was raising my druid I was a balance/resto hybrid. Soloing elites was all DoT/HoT, and try to outlast. Get Insect swarm and Moonfire on the elite and have 3 HoTs (Lifebloom, Regrowth, Rejuvenation) ticking on myself. I'd throw in Wrath or used Glyphed Healing Touch as necessary. It was mostly about whether or not I could do enough damage before going OOM, though the occasional critical on me at a bad time never helped. :p

I was able to do the Naga elites in Zanger, the Safari elites in Nagrand (minus the elekk, he hit too hard), and Harold Lane without using the horn, when at the same level. I didn't get darn bird in Dragonblight, the one in the Emerald Dragonshire, names escape me. After that I went full resto, and stopped trying to solo elites.

Since hitting 80 and getting dual spec, I've gone to soloing more in feral. I haven't done too many elites, the couple I have done were in bear form with tanking gear, relying on Improved leader of the pack, while hitting my survival cool-downs as needed. The elites I remember doing here were the ones at the end of Thorim's questline in Storm Peaks without calling the little earthen guys. But I had some epics at the time, so I'm not sure how do-able those are for someone in green/blues.

*shrugs* I don't know if that helped any really, but I'm sure some of the more experienced ferals will have some helpful tips. I look forward to seeing them myself!

the rune giants in fjord are tough because they have a stacking dot they put on you every melee attack after they gain a certain buff (runed fists or some crap i think). once you get 2-3 stacks of it, it really starts to tick your hp down at an alarming rate.

in short, much easier to solo as a ranged than as a melee. pet classes have it easiest, since at the worst, you just have to resummon your pet. soloing them as a feral druid would probably be best served by starting off with a dot-load in cat form then blowing barkskin to survive while you try to dps it down asap. use maim to get a break if you need to shift out and heal. otherwise, respec balance and laugh at these guys.

I thought Quor was going to say something about kiting, yell at the young kids and then go back to relaxing in his rocking chair.

I solo Chillmaw as a bear when I actually feel like doing dailies. Throw on my tanking gear and just tear into him. At around 50% health, pop Survival Instincts and Frenzied Regen, Use Barkskin a lot and my dodge trinket. Anything that can be Bash'd, you can pop out for regrowth and go back to bear in the stun. Do you have Nurturing Instincts? That's a good solo talent that you'll probably drop when you get to 80.

As balance...

You... Starfire > MF > IS > Starfall > Wrath wrath wrath wrath wrath wrath wrath wrath wrath wrath > barkskin.

If by then its not dead. Stop trying to solo heroics.
