Welcome back,

(not awfully helpful but trying to be objective here, my subjective self says GO PALLY! /grin)

First of all you should play the class that you like the best. Most important in a game. If you doubt what class will be to your liking, nothing stops you from trying all three of them!

As for paladins: a lot has changed and a lot will keep changing. Paladin tanks are very viable at the moment, so you can never go wrong there. Retribution depends a bit on who you are asking and I leave that open for discussion. Healing does not seem of interest to you, so meh.

Just remember that as a paladin (or a druid for that matter) you can play all three roles (tank, dps, healer), so you can always switch without creating a whole new character. That works for me!

Conclusion: a paladin is very viable these days, but in the end it all depends on YOUR preferences!

Good luck.

Paladin has a sound talent build for protection. My level 43 dwarf has been very capable of soloing quests, and even cases of instances. When my levels leading those in that instance. With my recent change to plate, I've manage to reach almost 60% physical resistance. 2449 health, 1600 mana, which holds up well if you time your casts for the right moment.

Consecration is very nice to generate threat being its a AoE. We have a targeted taunt, and another that can call up to 3 from a target. Righteous fury raises threat caused by holy spells by 90%, and consecration is a holy spell. From what I gather on threat capability, fairly easy to handle. Still have to watch for singles being pulled away.

As protection, I do close to no damage at all. Have not tried Retribution, tho I've heard some stories about the damage delt with thier 2 handers. You can chain cast judgements for little damage. At higher levels closer to 60 Retribution and Protection have a few additional holy damage spells.

If you like Alchemy, go for it!

Best take Herbalism with it, because it is the accompanying gathering skill... Try to keep them high, so you never find a node that you can not herb.

You dont "have to heal" as any class. The healing is just a little bonus to save downtime between fights.

For professions if you just want gold take 2 gathering professions (skinning, mining or herbing). But if you want something that really benefits your class I would reccomend Mining and Jewelcrafting. You can level them together and at the endgame the bonuses from JC are fantastic.
Blacksmithing, while useful, is pretty hard to level. It needs alot of mats so alot of mining or lots of gold at the AH.
Alchemy and Herbing, good money making professions and the bonus to potions is useful as well, and the free selfheal from herbing can be a lifesaver sometimes... and it looks prettiful.

Now in a completely unbiased way... Dwarven Healadin ftw!!

Wait, seriously? You hate people who are giving you a chance to make money with Blacksmithing?

If you're new to the game, 2x gathering professions all the way, unless you have a particular fondness for some crafting profession.

Another plus for having two gathering professions is that it allows your next toon to possess two actual crafting professions without the need of a gathering profession to back it up. I personally wish I would have done this, and once my Warlock gets to 80 and maxes out mining I intend to drop Mining on my Paladin and take up Jewelcrafting. Prices for herbs/ores of all levels are constantly on the rise, as many people leveling alts and such would rather just buy the materials from the AH instead of fetching it on their own. You can easily make money hand over fist with this method, and its not uncommon to make over 3000g by the time you level to 40.

Uh... BS is expensive at 80? If you ahve mining, BS is one of THE easiest to level, bar none.

Uh, you hate making things for people? *blink* That's how you, um, make money with a production craft lawl.

Nooooo, first-characters (I HATE HATE HATE the word 'toon'... we aren't playing in a kiddie cartoon here, folks) should do Dual-Gathering. Mining+Skin or Mining+Herb preferrably.
