Pros and cons of a mage?Follow

I am asking this on a few class boards because I am trying to get back in the game and trying to decide on a class to stick with, If you would, can you please share what you like and dislike about the class? I think the mage class could be interesting.

Pro: Blowing stuff up. Turning things into sheep/penguins. Blowing sheep and penguins up. Blowing things up with fire, ice and cool arcane energies. AOEing lots of things to dust.
Con: Squishy

I agree with Aquifer, the pro's are great but the con's squishie and also having mana problems until geared is a major pain.

A friend of mine loved the class when she got it right but died so many times she knew exactly where all the graveyards are no matter where she went yet my mage only dies when i get over confident and make stupid mistakes so the cons are it is a class that needs understanding and tends to be one that is very gear dependant as you will need loads of intellect and spell power or you run out of mana and that = dead.

The pros are especially if you are frost spec you can fully control a large group of mobs once you get to mid levels and above and kill them easily and probably easier to do than most other classes of course that all depends on you , and i have watched a mage in the plaguelands run through there without hardly stopping except to loot and killing multiple mobs up to around 10 at a time yet i know my hunter struggled a little there but of course get it wrong and you will know all the graveyards like my friend did.

The real advantages of being a mage are portability, the teleport and portal spells, and the ability to conjure food and water. Granted food is very inexpensive, it's just nice that you don't have to worry about stocking up before you go anywhere because you can whip up a batch whenever you want. Other than that it is a fully functional damage dealer.

Mage is no more gear dependent than any other class. In fact, we are probably less gear dependent while leveling because of all our snares and movement speed reducing effects. You can spam frost bolt on a mob all day long and it will never catch you, whereas a warrior has to fight straight up and is dead if he can't put out enough damage to kill his foe(s) before his health gets to 0.

As far as leveling goes, it's an easy class to level with some impressive burst damage and good crowd control for sticky situations.

Pros: Hands down most fun playstyle in wow
Cons: Have to be really really good to enjoy this class

Pros: Topping DPS Charts everytime, TELEPORTING to major cities, fire spec dots, free mana/health with gems/food/water, taking out VC in like 1-2 pulls ^_^
Cons: Getting one shotted by bosses

I don't know what raids you run in, but mages definitely do not top dps charts every time. A lot of the time it is feral druids in 3.1/3.2. I was consistently in the top 3-5 (a lot of times #1/#2) but there are fights that are bad for mages/ranged classes that melee dominate on.

And certainly don't expect to dominate the DPS in 5-mans unless you outgear all the other DPS significantly. Long cast times and general lack of buffs hurt us a *lot* in the 5-man environment. I'm noticing a lot of the time (with the newly renewed interest in heroics) that the better the DPS I have with me, the worse I do - stuff simply drops too fast to get more than a cast or two off.

Pros:

Mages can be lazy, only few buttons to use in a big fight. (exception: PvP)
All members love ya for ya food and portals.
One-shot mob-killing is much fun.
Very mobile due to teleports.
Excellent grinding skills.
IceBlock, Blink.
As we always say in our guild: Mages are pure luxuary! :D

Cons:

Us fire-FFB-mages are depending on proc's for leading dmg.
In PvP mages must be VERY skilled.
Being imba mage is like living on the edge, death is just around the corner.

This is even more blatant when you're fire/frostfire as the Ignite DoT is a HUGE part of your DPS.

Yea in 5 mans the only time I get high DPS with my mage is when stuff takes forever to die. Raid bosses I usually rank pretty high though. I am not a big fan of playing my mage in PVP because everything a mage does involves a cast time and when you have everybody else using instant cast abilitys/spells its hard to do any damage unless your at a distance. My DK and Shadow Priest can both kick more *** at PVP then my better geared mage.
