Pros and cons of a druid?Follow

#1 Aug 11 2009 at 6:07 AM Rating: Default
I am asking this on a few class boards because I am trying to get back in the game and trying to decide on a class to stick with, If you would, can you please share what you like and dislike about the class? Thank you for your time and input.

Duel Spec is God Send for the druid. I play mine as healer and tank can of the worth of both of those end game specs. Also they are both REALLY fun to play. Balance however, to ME atleast seems boring, probably because im not good at it for some reason....or I have a mage that makes people cry.

A druid is more versatile than a Swiss Army Knife.

I have one at level 10, is it a pain switching between forms, or not having all the tricks of a warrior or a rogue?

My druid is currently level 73, and I have to say it's one of the most fun classes I've played. The sheer versatility of what you can do, and the things you can do, makes it a lot of fun for me. My druid is dual-specced and I love having that option (didn't dual spec until level 70). I have a feral spec (more kitty than bear) and a resto spec.

Pros: stealth, healing, buffs, accelerated movement, flight form, some aoe's, good single target damage, huge versatility, stealth!

Cons: have to carry an extra set of gear which takes up a bag by itself, need to adapt your thinking to the role at hand, need to be flexible to fill the role the group (or the situation) needs.

To be honest, I played a druid a while back and only got him to his early 30's. I didn't much care for it. I was running around in bear form where I looked the same no matter what I wore, and it took forever to kill anything. I had tried cat form a couple of times and found myself getting into serious trouble when I would aggro multiple mobs. Back then I was in the mindset of playing the class one way (i.e. bear) and trying to stick to it. I wasn't flexible, and it didn't work for me.

I tried it again recently and have been loving it. Switching between forms is not hard at all. But that's not to say it's for everybody. I haven't tried out the boomkin aspect of the class, but I know a boomkin in our guild absolutely loves it. I love the stealth that kitty brings, the toughness that bear brings, the heals that tree bring, and the instant cast flight form. Oh my!

Is it for you? I can't answer that. Hopefully after reading the above you might have a good feel for whether it will or not, but only you can answer the question. Good luck!

Warrior doesn't have that many tricks. While rogues do, I think druids can match them, between different forms, Cyclone, Nature's Grasp/Entangling Roots, various stuns, etc.

This is SO true.

In fact, my static 10 Man Uld run has recently fallen apart due to a couple of the key members of the group spending ALL their time on alt druids.

:(

ME (Feral DPS): - 'We all set? Where is <MainTank>?'

Healer (Tree Druid): -'*sigh* He's in Westfall on his alt...AGAIN'

<MainTank> on his ALT whispers me: -'Dude...not gonna make it I wanna get aquatic form.'

Pros:

1. You can play as any class role.
2. Seems to me to be one of the fastest leveling classes
3. Very good survivability; between heals and bear form, it is tough to die.
4. Very good soloability; druids are some of the best soloers out there for taking down big baddies. I have soloed every heroic instance in TBC. Any quests that say less than 5 people needed I could solo until Icecrown... and then I could still solo half of them.
5. Feral and balance druids provide some of the best offensive buffs in the game with Leader of the Pack and Moonkin Aura.
6. Only class with a resurrection spell usable both in battle and on another player at will.
7. Teleport: Moonglade gives you a quick way to northern Kalimdor.

Cons:

1. First few levels are VERY slow. 1-10 is rough, and bear form is mediocre until upper levels (40+, IMO). This clears up a bit when you get cat form.
2. The forms at first play as you seem to see them; like rogues and warriors without the tricks. Later on they get other "tricks" to make it a more unique class.
3. Currently can only be a Night Elf or Tauren. This will change next year with the expansion.
4. Until level 57 old world weapons don't have feral AP, which means you're a bit handicapped.

The class can be summed up as "Starts off slow, then becomes AMAZINGLY GOOD at higher levels." If you level feral, once you hit 50 you'll pretty much never want to play another class. That was my experience, at least.

Pro:
Jack of all trades.

Con:
Master of none.

If I get singled out in a PvP fight, I go down very fast, even when I blow all the tricks I know (Barkskin, Survival Instincts, Lifeblood, Frenzied Regeneration). At least compared to my Death Knight, but that's not really a fair comparison, is it? I often find the shapeshifting to be quite a cockblocker (pardon the French), to be honest. Getting caught in caster or Cat form almost always means certain death and Bear form just can't deliver.

Especially Hunters seem to be a ***** at the moment for me, but I think that's a general issue as my Death Knight has issues with them as well. Giving them a reversed Charge (Disengage), a 100% parry cooldown (Deterrance), a ranged Execute (Kill Shot) and a shot that deals massive magical damage (Explosive Shot) was very awesome indeed. Even in Bear form, they take me out in seconds if I don't have Feral Charge up. And even then, they'll just Disengage and run away while tossing Kill Shots after me for the damage of my Shred crits. WTB 36-yard Shred range.

And Frost Mages who know what they're doing are also very annoying, especially since someone, in their infinite wisdom, decided to give them a stun. Not cool.

But I'm not complaining (much) since I can heal, tank and deeps all at the click of a button. Smiley: smile

No, seriously, I just click the button in FuBar and it changes my specs and my gear. Very awesome.

The lack of feral AP isn't actually a handicap, because your base melee damage in forms scales until level 60 roughly equal to a green weapon. After that, you're dependent on Feral AP like other classes are for weapons.

In other words, every time you level up, you get a free weapon upgrade. Kinda like a legacy weapon.

Pros: Being awesome at every role the game requires with just a change of spec and gear.

Cons: Having everyone tell you that you're overpowered and need to be nerfed because they suck and just can't compete.

Don't tell the guys on the mage boards, but I wish I would have leveled my druid first. There's nothing like looking for a group and just saying "I can do whatever you need."

speaking as an 80 restobear, I'd have to say that the "master of none" doesn't quite apply. I'm mainly a tree, and in general I maintain the same level of healing as any other class of healer for half the mana or less. This has saved more raids than I can count in a tight situation, and combined with the ability to bring BACK a healer who dies in a boss fight I think having a tree in a raid is almost but not quite a must.

As to Bear tanking, I do have some trouble keeping aggro, but not much if I"m paying attention.

My con for druids is that due to the variety of forms available, none of them get a full compliment of abilities right away, and shifting is expensive. For me the class didn't really start being fun till around lvl 30, but then it REALLY took off.

I would recommend druiding to anyone without hesitation.

It's actually the only class my girlfriend will play now >.>

Pros: The class is awesome and can do anything at a competitive level depending on the player.

Cons: You have to deal with my drunken ramblings when you use the class forums.

My experience: 80 Mage, 80 Paly (Tank), 80 Priest (Shadow)

IMO-

Pros – From a tanking perspective you are never starved for STA. That always bothered me as a Paly tank… I was a very good Paly tank, but when the druid rolls in with 10k more HP, there’s only so much skill you can boast… I found it very annoying that high damage fights just meant I would die – while druids just ‘got’ free stamina… (Don’t get me wrong – I still love Paly Tanking)

From DPS stance you are essentially a rogue, but you have the ability to heal. When I played as a DPS in my past roles, you needed to save something for your next fight. (In all cases it was mana).. But as a Rogue/Healer (Cat Form) – you can literally blow through your energy at a stupid rate, then flip over to healer, drop a quick HoT on yourself, then flip back into cat form. Unless your are fighting enemies that our out leveling you – you’ll do this every 3 – 4 fights. The down time is non existent. It’s great. No waiting for mana, no eating to heal, no drinking because your primary attack burns your only heal… It’s really nice. *I don’t know much about Moonkin DPS.

As a healer you are the best HoT in the game. Movement fights, forget about it – you got it easy…

Cons- From a tanking perspective you’re sort of like a warrior. (Obvious) and I’ve never much liked the warrior tanking approach. I don’t like the “Tab-Attack new Target” approach. I’m not sure how much that’s used anymore, but hopefully when I get to Druid End Game, I’ll find out.

From a DPS perspective, our movements (animation) isn’t as cool as a rogue. It seems like a lot of it is just a sort of paw mark going across the target… Not that impressive. There was something cool about the screen rotating as a mob chased down my tank as I played Arcane Mage – firing 3 arcing missiles at it… That was cool. And Paly DPS was just as good. I don’t know – stupid cat swiping at things… *I know nothing about Moonkin DPS.

As a healer you are a HoT expert and lack skills in other areas. In a 5 man this could be a problem, but in a raid you are assigned jobs that you should excel at… So this shouldn’t be a problem.

Overall – the best thing is that you can do anything. Healer, Tank, Melee, Caster. To my knowledge Druids are the only ones who can do it all. I don’t want to be style boxed into a mandatory spec. While things are much better than they used to be – there’s a reason no one Raids Frost mage… I like that I have options.

The worst thing is that much of the time you bumble around as a bear, cat, owl, sea lion, etc… I don’t know – that just doesn’t impress me.
