Yeah! Magedom again!

Okay... I finally leveled my mage because I missed blowing things up with a mage. Soooooooooo... we used to have a really nice graph around that had to do with levels of +spell dmg as to which spec would outperform which other spec (this was in TBC, and it was Deep Arcane vs. Arcane Fire vs. Deep Fire). Is there anything similar for WotLK FFB vs. Arcane vs. Arcane/Fire? I just dinged 80 today and am sitting with some pretty horrible gear (around 1300 +dmg). The good news is that gear is fairly easy to replace, but I want a spec that would be doing the most DPS in 5 mans, with some raiding.

Here's my armory to look at if you have questions about what gear and such I have. I need +hit the most I think, but the question I really am asking is about max DPS specs.

If lacking hit: FFB
If geared for ROAR: Fire/Arcane
If bored with fire: Arcane/Frost
Solo: FFB or Frost.
PvP: Frost or Arcane/Frost

As far as spec is concerned I can not say with 100% certainty as my mage is still only 72 and still in his beloved frost spec :( From what I have read (maybe Anobix can correct me as I am unsure this is right and I am work and don't have time to go through all of the posts to find the info) at lower levels of gear it is best to start out as arcane.

With regards to your gear....as far as I can see if you can get your tailoring to a higher level (I think 440 is when you learn the epic craftables) you will be able to replace some of the lacklustre items that you have at the moment. Alternatively you could always check out the AH and buy them.

Most starter specs are FFB when heading into entry T7 content. It is the most gear-friendly spec.

After that and when you are in 25s (10s tend to not have enough mana return) Arcane becomes viable when you are getting decked out in 200-213 loot. When you start to be not needing much more from Naxx/OS/EoE gear (and you are close to self-capping your hit (14% horde, 13% alliance when you included the boomkin/spriest hit buff) Arcane/Fire (18/53/0ish) becomes the standard spec, and continues to be through 3.2 at this point in time.

Just looking around at EJ and found the link for Lhivera's web page... (I probably spelled that wrong)... It says for my gear the best dps spec is deep arcane using a 3xAB, ABarr rotation gives about 2.1K dps... FFB spec is more like 1.6K DPS (which is what I have seen at the high end of my current spec).

Edit: Fixed Lhivera's name.

The only problem that you may have is that Arcane isn't very nice to your mana pool and at the moment yours is relatively low. Well timed evocations and a glyphed mana gem will be your best friend to counteract this problem.

Edit: I forgot to say try both (FFB and Arcane) specs out and see for yourself how you do in heroics. You may also find that you don't like one of them even if it does do less damage at the moment.

I think it really depends on the fight length for you and your raid composition and your gear. If you are lacking in crit then you will have fairly low DPS as ffb, as you get more crit its dps will go up faster than arcane dps will.

Great! Thanks, all for the info! I know a lot of it boils down to what you *like* to do (which... if I had my way, I'd be specced FROST FOREVER, BABY), but it's DPS is just really low and I want to be an attribute to the 5 man/raid I'm in as much as possible, which means bringin my 'A' game and doing the most DPS possible.

Thanks for your contributions, all!
