I haven't played Shadow, or cast offensive spells other than Smite really, in a long time, since Devouring Plague was my Undead racial and it had, IIRC, a 2 minute cooldown. My new priest is only level 22, so possibly this changes later, but I'm looking at the new DP and I'm wondering:

Why would I ever use SW:P instead? Unless it was when fighting multiple mobs to DOT everyone up?

I'm not talking about boss fights where you obviously just use both, but shorter fights where more than one DOT is a waste of mana.

Is there a point where SW:P gets superior, or do you just use it a whole lot less now? Am I missing something?

At 80 (and probably since whenever it was I first picked up VT) I don't tend to use SW:P if I'm out and about killing random mobs. As you say, it doesn't really tick quickly enough to be worth the mana. At the higher levels I'd go for VT, MB and MF, DP when it was off cool down (I don't think I've been out and about massacring random stuff since that changed).

At 22, I don't know...I'd probs just rely on DP, MB and MF. And wanding. Lots of wanding.

I'm guessing that DP may not be worth the mana to be an opener for shorter fights. Its healing component can change this if you are taking damage, plus it may not be off cd from a previous... wait a minute, there is no cd on DP anymore? (Note to self: read patch notes)

They both do comparable amounts of dps at that level. SW:P does less total damage in 18 seconds, DP does more damage, but takes 6 more seconds to do it.

I guess you have to check to see if you need healing, decide if a heal is required or the DP self heal will serve your purpose, size up the mob and decide whether it will last longer than 18 seconds, estimate your mana consumption rate and ability to sustain your current activities, plan on where you will take your next pit (drink) stop...

Decisions, decisions!!

Who said being a priest is easy?

No cooldown! And more damage. That's really my question. I'm used to SW:P being the dot of choice but now when I want a dot, I don't see why I wouldn't always reach for DP instead. Is SW:P dead in all but boss fights, or what?

And yeah, when I get VT I'll use that in my solo rotation anyway. I'm just curious about this change and the impact it's had on SW:P. So many talents related to it, and it doesn't seem like it'd be nearly as useful anymore.

Meanwhile, those meanies at Blizz won't let me dual spec until level 40. :(

The only reason I could see using SW:P over DP is if you had gone the Shadow route and have Imp SW:P and glyphed for it.
Side Note: Why is the Glyph of Shadow available at L20 when you can't get Shadow Form until 40?

The one thing I do recall while levelling is the leapfrogging of spell selection. Right now DP might be better, but come training time, SW:P will gain a rank and probably do more than DP, until DP gains another rank and so on.

I just noticed that too!

When I hit level 20 and was all, oh, yeah, I should get glyphs.
