Holy-What Am I Doing Wrong?Follow

#1 Aug 06 2009 at 12:24 PM Rating: Decent
Let me start out by saying I am fairly new at paladin healing. Originally I had her a tank, but due to guild shortage of healers, I dualspecced to holy. I have a disc priest that heals just fine, but I don't want my pally collecting dust, so I gave holy a shot.

I read the sticky at the top, but I think I am following that pretty closely. I do forget to judge a lot still, but I don't believe that failure to judge is whats making me suck so badly. I'm not really sure if its bad choice of heals, or bad gear, or just me failing at pally healing.

I keep Sacred Shield up on the tank, and Beacon of Light. When I remember to judge, I use JoW (its what I'm glyphed for). I generally use Holy Shock as much as I can, then Flash of Light, and Holy Light for big heals. I try to work in Divine Illumination and Divine Favor in when I can/need them.

My problem is not going OOM, but not being able to keep people up, including the tank, especially with AOE damage. Like I said, I am not experienced with pally healing, so my examples are H Nexus and reg ToC. I did fine in Nexus until Grand Magus Telestra, which I repeatedly failed at. I brought in my priest and did just fine. The other Nexus bosses I healed fine as a pally. In ToC, I can't make it past the first encounter right after the dismount (yes I'm re-equipping my weapon). Again I brought my priest and did just fine. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

My pally is not geared quite as well as my priest, but not terribly (though I know, I know, I need some trinkets). Here is a link to my armory:

The spec, I took from a friend, who seems to do really well healing.

On a side note, both tanks I was healing were not defense capped, but getting close. (a paladin in Nexus, a DK in ToC). I know this might have something to do with it, but like I said, my priest did fine.

I also use Flask of the Frost Wyrm and spellpower buff food for added help. Apparently its not enough, haha.
I would really appreciate any advice I could get, and I do apologize if this was addressed somewhere else.

Ill be honest, not played since the patch, but ive read everything I can. Want to keep up to date with my class while im away.

I think the basic plan for 5 mans is SS and Beacon on the tank. Use flash of light and holy shock to keep the rest of the party alive. If you have time try to keep the FoL HOT on the tank and use Holy Light if the tank starts taking a beating.

In raid situations you will probably just have to focus on the tank and leave the raid to the rest of the healers.

I think your problem is that you expect to be a raid healer. And while you can help with this, if you don't have another type of healer in the group it could end poorly.

While I'm not saying you shouldn't/can't raid heal, if your tanks are under-geared it means you need to put more focus on them and less on your group. All that DPS dying in the middle of a fight means is that the fight takes longer, and if you have no problems with mana, it might be an acceptable although unfortunate trade-off.

But then, that's how those first fights go. Good luck to you, holy healing is actually really fun and I'm glad you are trying it.

Well, I don't see one big thing, but I see a lot of little things that may add up for you.

Move the 2 points from Imp Conc Aura to Imp LoH; move 15 points from the ret tree, keeping three in Benediction and put them into the Prot tree to get Divine Guardian.

Get any of dozens of quest trinkets that give you SP, haste, or crit and replace that tanking trinket - you may as well have an empty slot there; you have the wrong chant on your pants, Spirit is worthless and the other one with the crit is the same price in mats; you have no chant on your boots - Tuskarrs.

You really need to work on your Rep, Kirin Tor and Hodir for the head and shoulder glyphs - you will get gear by running more dungeons but you can only get those glyphs with Rep and Hodir cannot be championed, and by the way - I'm pretty sure you can get the lesser Hodir glyph at honored so go get it; check out the Holy Pally FAQ for ideas on what dungeons to do for gear, the Ornate Saronite gear is wasting itemization on Resilience and there are a couple of quest trinkets in the FAQ.

Stop judging whenever you remember and start making it a priority to judge often enough to keep the haste buff up; when you say "I generally use Holy Shock as much as I can" you don't mean its your go-to heal do you? - use it when you need to but otherwise do what you're doing: keep SS and Beacon on the tank and FoL the dps (you aren't taking much damage are you? if so you need to get a better tank); are you hitting the MoBs when you judge wisdom in order to get mana return? I suspect not and you are losing the group healing from not judging light, so if you don't have mana issues but do have healing issues you may want to judge light.

You might want to try using haste food as your SP isn't bad but your haste is low.

Most importantly, don't get discouraged. Keep working at it. And Good Luck.

Thank you all very much for the advice. I think mostly what I needed was a bit more practice, I successfully healed heroics all afternoon :)
Always judging does significantly help. I will get the pants enchant, and better trinkets. I am working on the Hodir rep, I do have the first level of enchants for them, just had not gotten to add them to those new shoulders yet.

I will also try out the spec that you mentioned too, if that even slightly improves me, I should be great to go. I feel like now the only weakness is my bad gear, which will easily be remedied.

Thanks again for the help!

Terrible meta gem. The mana restore one is exponentially better for you. No helm glyph, work on that. Talisman of Troll Divinity is a wasted slot we get zero buff from spirit, might as well have a armor pen trinket in for all the good it is doing.

You are about 200sp over the +sp I had at lvl 70. Both your haste and crit are pretty low.

Run easy 5 man heroics, get rep and badges. There are rep items, there are some good drops like the healing bracers from heroics etc.

As always, good advice. Something to add...

Step 1: Run the new 5-man on Normal.
Step 2: Keep running it until Tears of the Vanquished drops.
Step 3: Profit!
