So my guild just got an under geared SP. I know how to fix his spec/glyphs up a bit but wanted to know what to do about gems and enchants.

Just go SP mindlessly or do you have better results mixing in some haste and crit?

Thanks.

Depends on how short on haste he is. Crit is not so important, nice to have but not a big deal. Below about 400 haste or so I reckon its worth gemming for, over that I would tend towards spellpower. Also, he'll need a couple of purified type gems for the meta activation.

The general rule of thumb is strive for enough haste between gear and gems to fit two Mind Flays in between each Mind Blast. After that, pure Spellpower all the way, excepting of course

a) gems needed to activate the Meta, and
b) gems that would combine with the socket bonus to grant even more spellpower than a red gem alone.

I'd also suggest to throw in hit over haste if he is under cap (289/263 if Dranei).

Even as an Alliance non-draenei don't aim to go over the 262 hit cap, unless it's likely they'll frequently be raiding without a draenei. It's quite difficult to out-range the buff.

Otherwise, the meta gem an SP should use is the chaotic skyflare. It requires two blue gems - these should always be purified (i.e. SP + spirit). Similarly, leg armor kits should be brilliant spellthread (SP + spirit).

If it's worth filling a yellow gem slot with an orange gem (i.e. the bonus is a healthy amount of SP), my preference would be for a potent (SP + crit). It's unlikely that you won't have enough haste from gear alone for the MB -> MFx2 "rotation".

Otherwise yes, SP all the way.
