Wanting to solo a priest...Follow

#1 Aug 01 2009 at 5:09 PM Rating: Decent
I was thinking about rolling a priest. I had tried it before but I always needed someone else there with me because even the simplest of quests seemed hard on a priest. I was wanting to go blood elf and solo it, does anyone have advice or tips? Thanks.

I leveled as holy, and did get discouraged as a lower level. I didn't have spirit tap and its mana return. I couldn't solo elites as high a level as some other classes I tried.

If I was starting a priest from scratch, I would make my first three talent points spirit tap, no matter which spec I chose. I would also get a good wand and keep it current.

Shadow is the generally recommended leveling spec, but it is possible to level as any of our 3 specs. Remember that you can always change and try more than one spec.

Don't let the lower levels discourage you. Leveling is easier now, and with the upcoming mount changes, it is going to be even faster. Playing a priest is really fun. Go for it.

Yes... Spirit Tap is a major talent to drop points into ASAP. It makes a huge difference in your ability to solo. I soloed as a shadow priest and found it far easier than when I leveled my Warrior. In fact, of the three classes I have above level 60, I'd say Priest is the easiest to level followed by Death Knight and then lastly Warrior. I regularly soloed mobs that are 4-5 levels higher than me and elites that were 2-3 levels higher than me (that came to a screeching halt once I hit Outland... those damn crystal giant things in Hellfire kicked my but when I tried to solo them at level 61).

I don't know about the solo potential of the other specs... but Shadow is a breeze. It's a bit rough for the first 10 levels... but once you get Spirit Tap it becomes a bit easier. It becomes a lot easier once you get Vampiric Embrace and becomes stupidly easy once you get Vampiric Touch.

I agree - Shadow is quite easy to level, and pretty good fun too. I actually have a blast now playing my priest, I even find myself cackling a little bit (under my breath of course!). I swear sometimes I am just a short skip away from a gingerbread house and a couple of kids in the oven.

However, as with most classes, I found you hit a nasty patch around 38, 58 and 68ish.

At 78 though, gosh - I blew through that final bit without breaking a sweat.

Go on, give it a hurl...you won't regret it!

I've leveled two priests... one holy and one shadow. You definitely want shadow for soloing. Like the others said, get your spirit tap first, and go from there. Once you get shadowform at level 40, you'll see a tremendous difference.

That having been said, I leveled both of mine before Blizz made all the leveling changes to the beginnig and OL areas, so it may be much easier now to level as holy.

I enjoy playing both of my priests, but I much prefer my shadow priest if I'm out doing dailies, just for her dmg done. My holy priest is more reserved for healing at this point, although she can still kick some a@! if she's so inclined!

How did you solo mobs 4-5 levels above you? I have trouble with mobs at the same level or 1 higher.

4-5 is actually pretty hard, but doable as pretty much any class if you really learn how to play with it. You should have no problems with mobs at the same level unless your gear is terribad.

I don't know what level you are, but I recall not feeling truly invincible until I got Vampiric Embrace. After that I didn't really look at the mob's color anymore.

Unlike some classes (*cough* ret pally *cough*), priest leveling isn't 2-button easy from the get-go, but if you hang in there for 30 or 40 levels, I think it really is a ton of fun.
