Spell penetration for Unholy builtFollow

Someone was checking me out the other day and made a convincing case for me to replace some of my stamina gem with spell penetration gem (blue +20 spell penetration) for PvP Unholy built. He was saying that since alot of my attack were magic base, I would have an easier time hitting pally, druid, etc that have spell resistance.

Does it make sense or the guy is just full of s..t and was messing with my brain.

Thx for your insight.

Yes some spell pen works for PvP.

Often you'll see around 60-80 spell pen on top ranking DK's in arena.

I was confused when I saw this, but then it made sense to me (after posting a topic about this very same subject in this very same forum).

You want your full magic damage to bypass any basic resists from buffs.

the number you want for a full piercing of possible resist is 135 (130 to be exact, but its easier to get 135 and better than going 140 or 120). the reason behind this is that, at max rank, pally shadow and frost resist auras, as well as priest shadow protection, all provide 130 resistance. you can gem for 20 penetration per gem, and get a 35 spell pen enchant for your cloak, meaning five gems of spell pen + cloak enchant.

depending on the bracket you run in, you could work with less. i.e. if youre doing 3's, then RMP is a significant threat, so having that 135 spell pen ensures that shadow protection doesnt stop a strangulate at the wrong time, or take off 30-40% of your scourge strike damage.
