The joys of PVP, and the pain of not having CoHFollow

I've been playing a Paladin since I stopped raiding and started spending my WoW time goofing off/doing PVP. This change has been good for me. I've always been a fan of hybrid classes and I loves my pally. On a more relevant note, a couple things I've found along the way (your mileage may vary):

1. Switching up my class has done wonders for my PVP skills. My eyesight is not great and my reflexes are worse, so I tend to have problems with mobility and just, basically, keeping up. Playing a class that is incredibly survivable gives you more margin for error and more time to practice, building up your speed and forming habits that eventually become automatic reactions. It's like memorizing Strunk and White before you sit down to write a novel. Playing something that has to get in there and fight close up just builds better precision. I also learned to play a lot more offensively. These are all skills that would help me, should I decide to come back to a squishier class.

2. Regardless of what class you do it with and how much you love or hate it, I've really come to believe that anyone who needs to improve their PVE healing should do some PVP. Nothing removes tunnel vision and teaches situational awareness like PVP. Nothing.

The thing is though? I miss my priest. I don't want to retire my pally, she's a good partner for my husband's DK, but I'm thinking I might level a new priest on the side. So, I might be around a bit more again. Once I get a computer that works. Also, what should I name her, do you think?

I totally agree with you, Teacake!

PvP is an excellent way to develop your skills and techniques on your toons. I've done it with all of my alts, just to really get a feel for everything that they can (and can't!) do. I remember after having my holy priest in AV for a bit (I always stayed on defense to max my healing practice), healing dungeons or raids seemed almost relaxing. With my Warlock it was more on "how the heck do I survive this until help arrives?" There too, it was a great way to learn what does an doesn't work.

Glad to hear you're thinking about rolling another priest, but I really stink at names as I'm sure you can tell from my sig. I usually take my husband's toon name and play off that. Unless he comes up with something really bad. Lypid? I can't work with that! LOL.

Have fun with it, and welcome back!

I’m glad you’re enjoying PVP more, though it’s really weird for me to hear someone’s liking the holy pally PVP experience…be it arena or battlegrounds, I’d rather see a holy pally on the other side than a tree or disc priest any day. (Sorry, shamans. I’ve been outclassed by some amazing shammy PVP healers…but not often.)

Are you running a prot/holy build for PVP heals? The silencing shield, etc. seems to give it more offensive options.

Yep. It's a lot of fun. I do find it has offensive advantages, especially if you glyph Avenger's Shield. But the main fun for me is that my mana pool is endless and I'm very hard to take down. I love watching three guys lose their temper and pile on me while the flag carrier just runs away. Makes me giggle. Disc priests like to brag about their survivability but paladins, especially prot specced, really are a whole new class of immortal. It's a gimmick spec but it'll be fun til they nerf it.

It has its limitations though. Great for running around with my husband's DK but ***** with his rogue. It's entirely possible that I'm just better at playing a priest and not so good with my pally, but I have trouble keeping squishier classes alive against well-geared and/or well-played DPS. The mitigation abilities are decent but I find it difficult to come up with good burst healing, even with the big-*** Flash of Light crits you get with Prot spec. Not having an instant heal (as Prot) or a HOT makes you a stand-there-and-heal healer, which has its downsides in PVP.

Overall, I prefer the priest healing mechanics. Again, that may be a matter of comfort zone. Or it could just be that priests rawk. ;) But I was never very good at surviving on my priest in PVP. You really don't have a second to hesitate or make a mistake and I'm just, yanno, slow.
