#1 Jul 12 2009 at 3:59 AM Rating: Default
I know that to increase the critcal hit chance you increase Agility and to increase attack power you increase strength but what i don't know is what increases the hit rating and the expertise rating , so far the hit rating is zero and the expertise is 3. how do i increase them , also which of them is the most imprtant if someone can prioratize them for me
(i am ret pally) for both pvp and pve but mostly i pve for now and few pvp

What level are you?

Basically hit is something you work on when you are lvl 80, you have an inherent chance to miss on all swings/casts. I believe it is 7% against raid content, getting to the +hit cap cuts that out. If you aren't missing 7% of your melee attacks your dps goes up, not as easy to quantify as STR = Attack Power, but in its own way it increases your dps by a lot because a missed swing is a big loss of dps. Think the cap is 262, should come from your gear. If you aren't lvl 80 don't get overly excited about it.

Expertise, mobs can dodge/block/parry your moves. Expertise reduces their chance to do so.

So hit reduces your chance to just swing and miss, expertise reduces their chance to dodge. Sounds the same but is different.

If you aren't lv 80, like Bohd said hit and expertise aren't something to worry about.

All your 2-handed melee swings have an inherent 5% chance to miss against a target the same level as you. Heroic 5-man bosses are lv 82, so you'll have a 7% chance to miss them. Raid bosses are considered lv 83, so 8% there.

Hit rating is currently the most important stat, to make sure melee swings and attached seals hit. After getting 263 hit rating, just stack strength. Expertise is a nice stat, but it's hard to find on plate gear and strength is a better option for gemming.

26 is the expertise cap btw, this eliminates the 6.25% chance a boss has to dodge your attacks from behind.

You increase your hit rating by getting gear with hit on it, the same goes for expertise. Both of those stats come directly from "hit" and "expertise"

To add to this incredible post:
Make sure it's Expertise in your window, not total from gear. When someone told me I needed 46 to prevent parry/dodge/etc from front as tank, I thought "awesome, my chest gives me 57!"
Yeah no, so watch the rating in your char window.
