Finishing leveling my DK (currently 73)Follow

#1 Jul 06 2009 at 8:44 AM Rating: Good
Hey all,

So I've decided to finish northrend and go back to my DK.

I haven't done any speccing stuff lately (since pre-3.1 or before) so here is what I was thinking:
(unholy)

The next two points will finish vendetta then I will put the last points into rage of rivendare

something like this:

anything you guys would change/can link to me?

once he hits 80 I may change up his spec some for proper dps (which I can read the sticky and other websites for). The two glyphs I was unsure of, are scourge strike and deathgrip worthwhile for leveling (I loved the deathgrip glyph before all of the talent resets etc of 3.1) but was stuck if that, deathstrike, disease, or whatever would be a better choice for me.

Sorry if this has been covered or if this has the simple reply of "do whatever looks fun to you". I deal with those posts all the time in the Mage forum but tend to help out or nudge in one direction or another when I can :-)

Also, quick question about Necrosis -- I don't exactly understand the talent -- does that mean that ontop of their normal damage it will deal 20% (maxed out) of the weapon damage as shadow or am I missing something here -- and how good is that talent to begin with (If it is what I previously stated I could imagine it adding a decent amount of damage to even just autoattacking).

Skip Vendetta and get Rune Tap instead. Spend the next points on improving it. Having a reliable 20% self-heal on a 30-second cooldown is better than a 6% self-heal that procs off of kills, in my opinion.

Also, but this is again my personal opinion, you should look to get Dark Death instead of the Death Grip glyph. I usually pull mobs with Icy Touch while running towards them, which means the global cooldown on Plague Strike is up when I reach the target. Dark Death gives you an additional 15% damage on Death Coil, which is your runic power dump when Unholy (at least it's mine).

If you find yourself using Plague Strike a lot, get Rage of Rivendare and the Plague Strike glyph instead of Dark Death. My Plague Strike crits for 2,000-ish on leather/mail. 20% extra would be sweet. And I use it all the time when questing. Icy Touch > Plague Strike > Scourge Strike and if the last one crits, mob goes down.

Also, get to Grizzly Hills, go do the dailies in Venture Bay. Doing one cycle of dailies will give you enough coins to buy the Scourge Strike sigil from the vendor (who appears if your faction is in control of the area (go to the island and kill stuff while staying near the flag to capture it).

As for Necrosis, it will take the last white hit/crit and deal an additional 20% of that as shadow damage. So if you hit a mob for, say, 500 damage on an auto-attack, you'll deal an additional 100 damage as shadow damage (kind of like a proc). If you crit for, say, 1,000 damage, you will deal 200 damage via Necrosis.

Thanks Maz, excellent advice.

Doing that will let me save some talent points from blood to unholy.

edit: nevermind, I will actually have to spend an additional point in blood to max out improved rune tap. I'm going to mess with the talent trees and see what I can drop points in.

editx2:

Changed my level 73 build:

Dropped vendetta stuff and a point in DC for Rune Tap and dropped a couple points in unholy to meet that.

To max out for level 80 I will pick up 3 points in I. Rune Tap, 1pt in DC, 1pt in Wandering Plague and 2 more in Rage of Rivendare

I wasn't sure how well bladed armor scaled as I have only played my mage (above level 60ish) so I don't know how well I should count 5AP/180armor.

couldn't decide of Gargoyle was worth taking a point out of the other talents for, especially when it is a call-on ability, I can't see it being that helpful, at least while soloing unless I am against a big elite or something like that.

Knowing where you come from Anobix, don't stack int ;P

Also, what do you focus on playing? Your 80 build looks a bit like a combination of PvP and PvE talents... I'm taking it you want to get a pure leveling spec but stay unholy, amirite?

I'm not sure what I plan on doing. It may just be a farming alt, I doubt I will change mains as I am so geared on my mage it would take a while for me to gear up and get enough experience playing the DK to make it worthwhile (that and my guild has a policy about changing mains and then keeping them) -- although I feel lik I could do better theorycrafted DPS than some DPS DKs that I have seen as I would use the cookie cutter builds.

But yeah, right now I want to keep just a normal leveling/grinding spec and when I did leveling soon after wotlk release I did Blood then switched to Unholy and liked it (if not only for the perma-ghoul and the 20% mount speed).

Seems like you're doing fine for a leveling spec. I wouldn't bother with gargoyle until raiding (where it does become a great asset).

Bladed Armor has one excellent quality: You don't have to think about it, it's always on. For Kiz (at 14k armor in DPS gear) it's over 380 static AP for only 5 talent points. Unless you're draped in a lot of leather gear, I'd say it's worth it if you can fit it in.
