Hi. My names Mithrandia, and I suck at healing.

Well, maybe not suck. But I'm a poor healer at best.

I'm 72 with a heal spec and a heal set, the heal set which isn't the best.

Stats are:
668 Healing
18.87% Crit Chance
110 Haste Rating
63 Mana Regen

I alternate between using healbot, and Grid with Keybinds.

Part of my problem is that I don't know my keybinds well enough, I prefer prot and solo as prot.

The other part is I get tunnel vision.

Really I just need more experience, but I have to ask. Any tips? Tricks of the Trade you have? Etc...?

Thanks in advance.

I'll bite and ask the obvious question: Why heal then?

I'd like to offer you a magic bullet, but really it's this. Obviously doing it more often will help with your keybind problem. But I also think, personally, that PVE healing is a lot about instinct and rhythm, something you just kind of fall into by doing.

However, I will point you here for some useful pally healing tips, if you haven't read it already.

Other than that: don't let the tank blame you for his bad gear, the DPS blame you for their inability to manage aggro, or the Red Sox blame you for that ball that went through Buckner's legs in the '86 series. Because they'll all try. I think healing often requires a thick skin and a good sense of whether or not it was really your fault. Of course, sometimes it really will be.

I'm healing because its interesting, more challenging, something that can be useful to my guild, and ebcause its so different from DPS/tanking.

Its not that I dislike it, its that I prefer prot, which is why I have dual spec.

And thats what I figured. Though not really looking for a magic bullet, just any tricks ya'll may have. And I did read the wiki. ^^

Thanks again!

Heh. In that case you're welcome for the, um, useless reply that told you nothing you don't already know. I'm so good at that!

No, no. Your reply was not useless. I didn't know that the Red Sox blame me for that ball going through Buckner's legs. I'll admit I was hoping and praying for just that at the time, but I always thought they blamed the Yankees for everything.

Us Mets fans are hopeless, rooting for a pathetic team whose only claim to fame the last 25 years has been finding new and different ways to lose. I never thought anyone blamed us for anything! ;)

Nah. Usually it's Bucky Dent. They only blame the Yankees for, you know, sucking.

Returning back to this point because Emmit just reminded me of it in the healer thread on the main board. Whenever I change my keybinds I do battlegrounds for an hour or so before I do anything else (especially if the spouse wants to drag me into the arena). I highly recommend this even if you hate PVP. It's a really fast way to get them down, without practicing "live" in an instance/raid with the attendant risk of causing wipes and high repair bills.

This is such good advice. And it's really a win/win all the way around. You get some experience with your keybinds and with making adjustments to your ui, and the battlegrounds get a healer. Even half a healer would be welcomed.

I play 4 hybrids, priest, druid, shaman, pally. All but the pally are spec'd for heals. All have a somewhat different style of healing.

Here is what I did. I use healbot. I set up my heals from smallest heal to largest. So left click is renew, flash heal is on the mouse wheel, greater heal is on right click. I use alt, ctrl, and shift for dispells, etc (depends on toon). Then practice. I took friends out to elites and tried out my various heals on them. You can also self heal yourself to see which heals go for what amounts.

Then run some lower level instances to get a feel for 5mans.
Then go for level appropriate stuff. Don't heal stupid DPS. That will save you loads of headaches and mana. Know what all your "oh ****" buttons are for when damage spikes occur. Keep them handy.

Have fun, collect epix, profit.

Hi, Mithrandia.

[/monotonous voice]

I'm in the same boat as you, except I'm level 75. I've had some healing experience, but only on my Priest and Druid, which both use entirely different methods than Paladins, from what I've learned. The lack of a heal-over-time really irks me, because I'm the C&C (cast & chill) kind of healer whereas healing with my Paladin is more of a cast-cast-cast-cast-cast kind of playstyle.

I'm using hover-macros which makes it a lot easier. I also have a pretty nice UI when it comes to healing, because the guy who made the UI compilation was a Shaman healer at the time. Group/raid player avatars are minimalistic and grouped, so I don't have to throw my cursor all over the screen when I need to heal.

I don't use Clique, Healbot, Grid or any of those addons. At least, not unless the UI guy had them heavily modified, but I don't feel like I need them either.

To be honest, I haven't healed on my Paladin since level 60 and the pace has quickened quite a bit since then. I'm almost at the 1k mark for dual-spec, so it'll be interesting to try it out in some instances (epic fail incoming).

Since I don't have a Holy spec, I can only go with the stats provided by Examiner while examining myself in my healing gear with my Retribution build. This should provide the raw numbers without talented bonusses which show up in the character screen. I will get more mana and crit on my heals once I go Holy, due to talents, so bear that in mind.

680 healing
201 spell crit rating
120 spell haste rating
52 mana regen per 5 sec
