Pally Advice(spec change?)Follow

So I ran Naxx10 tonight as Prot, tanked some bosses and it was a LOT OF FUN! You guys rock for showing me how to Prot.

Problem: During Sapph I went offspec to Ret so another person could tank.
1600dps...
/faceshoot

During the run I was only Pally so I got some Holy Pally gear...

Here is a quick list of my Ret junk:
Weap: Titansteel Destroyer
Libram: Furious Blows
Helm: Titan's Outlook
Neck: Choker of the Betrayer
Shoulders: Savage Saronite Pauldrons
Back: Illskar's Greatcloak
Body: Savage Saronite Hauberk
Wrist: Hateful Gladiator's Bracers of Triumph
Hands: Valorous Redemption Gauntlets
Waist: Savage Saronite Waistguard
Legs: Valorous Redemption Legplates
Feet: Savage Saronite Walkers
Ring1: Dream Signet(Soldier: +28 Strength, +42 Stamina, +28 Critical Strike Rating)
Ring2: Hateful Gladiator's Band of Triumph
Trinket1: Darkmoon Card: Death
Trinket2: Serrah's Star

I just got T7 body token.
I was going to use it for Prot body but then I got
Massive Skeletal Ribcage
which I was told is better.

For HOLY stuff I ended up with
Plated Gloves of Relief
and
Blackened Legplates of Feugen

My question is this I guess.

Should I turn the tier into Ret and try and gear it a bit more, though DPS are dime a dozen

OR

Should I respec Ret into Holy, get the Holy T7 chest and begin building a set?
I am a 400+ BSmith(on way to 450) and have NO FUNDS to just buy full Holy gear out of nothing.
Healers are hard to find.

I know personal pref matters but I don't care much about offspec but having either is nice.. any advice would be awesome.

It really depends on your personal preferences. I started off as prot/holy dual specc but after a couple of weeks went prot/ret. Gearing up is slower as ret than it is as holy as there's a lot of competition for drops always, but I've found that in raid setting (Ulduar 10 or 25) it's actually better to be able to switch ret every so often for certain fights where 2/3 tanks are not needed. Hodir, Vezzax and Mimiron are examples of that.

As for yout ret gear, yeah, it needs work, but such is the case for everyone's gear, isn't it?

Of course, it also depends on your guild and playstyle. I don't do heroics too often, but as tank it takes me one minute or two to get a pug if I feel like running something. The same applies (mostly) to pre-3.1 raids most of the time, where I find it easy-ish to get things running.

One thing I can say is that ret is a nice departure from tanking or healing (which I do on my alt). It's more relaxed and a lot of fun every so often, though it's taking me forever to get my ret gear to the level I want to bring it to.

IMO, you should look into getting the EoV libram ASAP and EoH trinket as first upgrades in your ret set.

Thanks for the response. Ret can be fun I agree, and the competition for gear is really high.
Right now I aim to run heroics -all- the time, takes me between 1-3 hours to get groups, don't know why it is so hard as a tank. That's the only reason I considered Holy was to try and get more groups going.
As for Emblems, I do know I need those but I still need so much on Prot that it will be a long while for those lol.

Thanks for response.

DPS numbers don't mean much on sapphiron, because it's mosre important to move out of Chills. Besides, it's in the air half the time so any kind of sustained dps is really impossible. Check the healing meters next time you fight sapphiron, Judgement of Light will probably be outperforming your dedicated healers on that fight.

That part was hilarious. Between JoL and Flash Heals I was #2 on Overall Healing and HPS with 2400 lol! People thought I was Holy for the fight.

Serious question:
Can Ret Pally put up 4k+ DPS on single target boss without Uld gear?

I ask this because I know without 4k DPS most people won't touch you in Uld and that is the big decision between Holy and Ret for me.

Sure you can get 4k pre-Ulduar, I can get that (depending on RNG)

There are always a few fights where if the main tank goes down you just die. This lends to those who like to Prot/Ret. You can Ret while the MT fights - because if he dies - it's just a wipe (Usually). Example: ?What's the name of the boss in Naxx with the spores that turn off agro and increase crits??? Also - Example: Hodir.

However - guilds who have an 'off-healer' often ask that person to be a main healer. Suddenly you are short on heals - guess what - Tanks are generally easier to get. You're now healing.

Just remember - if you got Tank/Ret - you will probably be 90% tank, 10% Ret. If you are a Tank/Heals you could be an % - it all depends on your guild.

Thanks to all replies. I went all out on my Ret and while it's still wimpy(TERRIBLE luck on Tier shoulders) I topped DPS a few times in Military Quarter in Naxx10 last night. Ended up with a few 5k DPS from groups, and 3k on bosses. Not terrible considering the lack of raiding I have done!

You guys rock :)
