I need a little reassurance!!Follow

The sole reason I rolled my DK was that my guild is in serious need of tanks. We have an over abundance of Cloth DPS and since my main is a mage I figured I'd help out. Last night I tried to help a guildie out since he just hit 80 to get some gear from heroics. We had a DK tank for us he was fairly well geared. Our healer couldn't keep him alive for anything. I've ran with that healer since level 1. We leveled our toons together so I know he knows how to heal. This has me scared...why do so many healers complain about DKs. Are they that difficult to tank with? Do I need to rethink my tank class and go with a Pally or Warrior? I really like how the DK plays and will probably level him anyway; but is he the right choice to tank with? What is the most common mistake that DK tanks make that make them almost unhealable?

I have a DK tank and have run probably upwards of 40 heroics tanking and don't generally have any problems. My friend just got his tree druid up to 80 and we have been running some instances together and he did say that I would take the odd massive damage spike, it was quite handy him being in the same room as me as it helped me time using my CD's better. It sounds like the DK you ran with may not have been uncrittable.

He said he was Def capped but I don't know about his dodge and parry %. He was in all purple and blue gear but I didn't take the time to look him over very well. He was a guild member and frequently OT's for us. Maybe it was a bad night IDK. Is DK tanking harder than say warrior or Pally?

To be honest I've not had a lot of experience with other classes tanking. My pally was a tank back in TBC but not at the level cap or in heroics. Having said that DK's do seem pretty easy to tank with and if you have a decent DK tank (from my dps'ing point of view) runs can go very smoothly. Have a look at his armory, maybe he is missing some key talents. I've run some of the easier heroics like UK with healers that were all in blues and greens doing their first heroic without deaths before. He hadn't forgoten to put on his rune for the stoneskin gargoyle on had he?
Once I started an instance in my dps spec, fortunatly it was just 2 mobs "WTF where is my Howling Blast, oh S**T". Fortunatly that was a run with my mate so I was able to say look out I might be taking a lot of damage.

Edit

My mate just came in and I asked him if he found DK's harder you heal in general and he said yes.

post his armory and the people here can tell you if it was just a gear/talent thing or possibly something else.

Problem is simple, one of those two assertions is false. They can not be both true. Either your healer was @#%^ing up (or massively undergeared) or the tank was undergeared, it's as simple as that. As has been pointed out, throw us an armory link so we can have a better look at the DK's gear.

Your mate is unexperienced. I've spend a lot of my time healing since WOTLK (since launch, technically, but there were no DK's back then) and I can tell you none of the tank classes is specifically harder to heal than others; it's entirely gear dependant. Our guild's previous MT was a Blood DK and he is probably the easiest target I've ever healed; DK's have a little edge due to their overpowered Frost Presence and cooldowns, which are getting nerfed next patch. Our guild's current MT is a Protection Paladin and he's now pretty much as easy to heal as the DK used to be. We also roll with a Feral Druid off-tank who takes a tiny bit more damage but has slightly more hit points to compensate for it. You might notice slight differences in terms of avoidance, but you cannot really say that one tanking class is 'generally easier/harder to heal'.

Edit: Also, as a little nitpickery;

He said he was Def capped but...

Def capped does not exist (Or to be more exact, it never happens). You/he meant 'uncrittable'. Just like to get this false wording out of the world.

I (while myself not a typical main healer but I have some experience in the area) found that Blood Dk's are amazingly easy to Heal, esp with Improved Leader of the Pack. Since most Blood DK's I know have atleast 20+ Crit.

It depends on how many mobs are on them and how much dmg they can handle. (My 61 Frost Dk seems to die alot faster than my Bear Form Druid, but my Frost Dk has Laser pew Pew skill...Hungering Cold+DeathChill and Howling Blast= 5-6 2k crits :D)

Def' cap has for a long time been widely accepted as meaning uncrittable. Roll with it.

No.

Why should I roll with something if I disagree with it in the first place? I'm not going to make a huge ruckus everytime somebody talks about the 'def cap', but why on earth should we insist on using wrong and confusing terms over more clear ones? And especially when the parttakers of a discussion are new to tanking, why use a confusing term?

Seconded.

Using an inaccurate phrase doesn't do anything but confuse newer players and perpetuate it's use. Why is it so hard to say "crit immune" rather than "def capped"?
