Heroic Naxx vs. Heroic UlduarFollow

#1 Jul 01 2009 at 2:30 AM Rating: Decent
I have a question for any other arcane mages, I'm geared fairly well over 2k spell power unbuffed.

During our weekly 25 naxx runs, I stay pretty close to the top of the dps, (within top 3). But when we do Ulduar, i struggle to pull 2k on a single boss???? Not sure why, run with same buffs, same group really. Any ideas? I'm not talking about trash pulls, those are easy. Strictly boss encounters.

thanks

Quick points:

Which fights have you done so far in Ulduar and how many times -- my DPS has risien dramatically (not completely gear-based) because of familiarity with fights and movement.

That being said, arcane isn't good for Ulduar fights, at least not compared to arcane/fire (current top DPS spec).

The other reason Ulduar fights will be worse for you is that they are a lot longer than Naxx fights, especially after outgearing Naxx (lol 2 weeks).

Where a Naxx fight will take 2-3 (maybe 4) minutes, 4 minutes is generally the lowest end on fight length where most are a decent amount longer than that. When you have that you have more time between cooldowns and also bring in mana problems, needing to evocate more and probably move more.

Can you link your armory and say what your rotation is? -- If it is anything other than 3xAB AM it is probably wrong.

Here is my armory, yes rotation is 3xABlast, then Abarrage, unless AM procs.

All bosses except, mimiron, Vezax and Saron.

and this is over several weeks of running, I notice even the amount of damage each cast does is lower against other raid bosses.

Only difference i have changed is my hit rating, which I lowered a lot.

But according to recount during last nights run.

Only had one miss with Ablast and 3 with arcane missles. unless hit rating does more then just help with either hitting or missing mob.

You don't have maxed out Torment the Weak (that's an extra 12% more damage.

Which armor are you wearing during fights? If molten you should be glyphing for it (if you can handle the mana cost).

Arcane Barrage is no longer used in rotations, you are wasting mana. It should just be ABx2 AM/Mbar

I changed up your build a bit:

http://www.wowarmory.com/talent-calc.xml?cid=8&tal=23000513310033015032310250532103000000000000000000000000002032030010000000000000000000

you shouldn't really be using frost spells other than for some aoe, so talenting for them isn't that important, the only reason you are spending points in frost tree is for IV and Precision.

You also gemmed way too much for hit. WAY too much. You shouldn't ever have to gem for hit, if you've been raiding so much you should have plenty of gear pieces that can fill up with hit without ever gemming for it. You could add over 100 spellpower (95 to meet the meta socket bonus).

Blue gems/purple gems should always be purified twilight opals.

Anobix, you're the mage I mold after when I can but I have to question Arcane Missiles ever being used.
I have found the damage on Missiles per second vs Barrage is terrible because you are behind on your second rotation and the damage from missiles seems awful though I did not Glyph them.

I followed your Fire to the line, but have yet to test it on a real boss, only Yogg so far.

Arcane missiles does a decent amount of damage, especially glyphed. The main reason for it though, is that this way you won't ever miss a missile barrage (which you should be using on 3stacks of AB anyway) and that it is much more mana efficient than Abar (which since the coefficient nerf in 3.08/3.09 it became a waste of mana in a normal rotation unless you are moving).

I run Ulduar as arcane.

Learning the fights makes a huge difference in dps. When is Bloodlust/Heroism? When do you move? When are the aggro tables reset? Once you've got all that down, you need to figure out when it's important to dps and when you get mana back.

Save mana for when it's most effective and needed. Don't use Barrage unless you're doing a ton of moving and have a lot of mana. Anobix is correct about AM, even the slow one ends up being better. Arcane mages live and die by mana management, Ulduar is a marathon to Naxx's sprint. When you hit your cooldowns, you want to be able to spam AB until AP runs out, and not go OOM. It's hard to find places in some fights to evocate (Ignis), but others (Mimiron) are great for arcane if you plan properly and know your group well.
