My Prot build. Would like your commentsFollow

Hello everyone. I recently changed to a prot spec tree for pvp survivability. It's new to me, and I'm still getting used to the new spells and strikes. I usually charge, then thunderclap and stun with either concusion or shockwave, then use whatever is ready. My dps is all over from 600 to 2000, but I am MUCH more survivable in battlegrounds. I found myself short of rage, and I use cleave for multiple enemys, so that explains my reasoning for fury. I'm wondering if haste, so I hit more often and generate rage is important, or what should I concentrate on. What do u guys think?

Thanks for the help. I always get a good answer here.

Hi. I saw no-one had came to your aid, so I thought I'd try. I'm certainly not an accomplished pvp'er but I have played as prot from the mid-50s onwards and that includes an enormous number of BGs and arenas.

I think your big problem is with the rage generation. Quite simply in order to gain decent amounts of rage you have to have enemies hitting you, and chances are they are hitting your team mates (as if they see a warrior wielding a shield they know it won't be a quick kill and instead will hit almost anyone else instead). The problem with cleave and HS is that they cost rage and also cost the rage of the autoattack that they replace, so in effect they cost double rage. Only use them when you have rage to spare (i.e. at 50% plus).

Are you using Bloodrage whenever it is off cooldown? You have the glyph to make it cost no health so it should always be on cooldown.

Be sure to save one of concussion blow or shockwave for that all important spell interrupt. If an almost dead druid casts that heal then you will die instead of him. That is no time to have your interrupts on cooldown.

My attacks will usually go charge macro (casts bloodrage, trinket, charge and zerker rage all in one to ensure maximum rage to start the fight) -> thunderclap -> demoralising shout -> shockwave and then I will stack hamstring followed by rend on rogues or druids and switch to defensive stance if there are likely to be lots of Revenges. Reflect is always on cooldown and Conc blow is saved for the spell interrupts. Shield Slam is also always on CD as it is our big hitter.
If there are hunters nearby I will taunt the pets for additional rage.

As far as talents go I'd ditch commanding presence and improved cleave for Devastate and Sword and Board (a rage-free shield slam is very nice indeed) and Improved Bloodrage (for maximum initial rage).

I'd try to get away from the cleaving if you are playing prot. It is fairly rare to get targets lining up in melee range of you (i.e. where they will get cleaved) and if you start playing in the arena the chance of being able to cleave multiple targets is almost none.

The secret to becoming a good prot warrior is ensuring that you always have the rage ready when you need to knock out an interrupt/intercept/shattering blow and still ensuring that you can pull off the big executes.

Try getting a dps meter and using it in duels against a guildmate. Try certain rotations or abilities and try to find how YOU can get the best dps/rage efficiency.

I have messed around with a few builds, and this is the one that i have settled on, although i do run my standard deep wounds spec alot, and it does ok. Prot PVP is pretty gear dependent though. Sure, you can just go in your tanking gear, but your just gonna hurt your team. You're useless unless you can kill things. Gather up all the BV gear you can. You can get quite a bit from Naxx, and heroic naxx. Gem it for crit/str.

However, if you dont have access to the PVE gear, then you are definitely better off wearing the PVP gear, and any BV pieces you can find.

As far as rage goes, you just have to manage it smartly. Stack up 5 sunders, then wait for the opportunity/rage to burn down your opponent, with a disarm, then shield slam and stuns.

As someone else mentioned, taunting pets is a great way to get rage. I also like to annoy a melee until he attacks me, then i go after more vulnerable targets, with the melee feeding me rage.

Keep spell reflect on cd in all group situations, and pick and choose when to use it in one on one.

Charge, charge, charge! My charge and intercept is almost always on cd. I just try to zip around to as many targets as i can, interrupting ect.

Thunderclap in large groups. This may proc deepwounds on multiple targets which is free damage.

Hit rating is EXTREMELY important. Make sure you are at the cap (5%). This will also help your rage out. There is no worse feeling then setting someone up for the perfect shield slam, and it misses :(

Thanks for the response guys. I got rid of cleave long ago, and my rage levels are fine. Next time i re-spec, i'll do the improved charge a bit just to get more opening rage. I added additional defense to my gear, and with revenge happening more often, my dps is more stable and higher now. It's still anywhere from 1000, but up to mid 2's now. All depends on whats on cooldown when i start a fight. I'm not trying to be a tank, I guess i'm trying to be a hybrid dps prot. I havent tried a heroic yet, so who knows how i'll do. As arms, i was usually the highest dps. I dont think i'll get the same dps, but maybe my stuns now will help.

My biggest goal was to stay alive when attacked by a single opponent. As arms i would almost always die. Lots of it was lack of skill, but no counter to spells, and no way to stun, kills most arms and fury fights. Now with prot, I hold my own, and lots of time have the enemy running away when after 2 stuns and 10k damage, they havent gotten their second swing yet.

I'm not sure why u dont like commanding presence. two of my specials depend on high attack power.

Well, thanks again for the help, one last comment is skill really is important. I spend alot of time panicking while looking for the right button to press, all at the same time as trying to run around. Wish i was young again!
