Opinion on T8 Gear's AppearanceFollow

#1 Jun 20 2009 at 12:05 AM Rating: Good
Tier 8 gear for priests is decent. It's not the best set we've ever had, but it's not the worst, either. But that's just it: It's meh.

Recently, I was looking back through concept art for T8 gear and came across this gem.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is a sexy set right there.

I would kill for that set. That concept art took epic and ramped it up to eleven. I can't get over how much I love that concept art.

Now, what happened? Were they afraid of making us look too badass?

It just concerns me that we started with concept art to rival the badasses memes are made of, and we get a facemask rather than a hood, and non-existent wings.

The concept art had the possibility to rival Tier 6, but in practice it failed.

I'm just wondering who could look at the transition from concept art to live items and think it was a good choice?

It's one thing if technological limitations prevented them from allowing it to reach its full glory, but I stand by my opinion that they could have had something wonderful, but dropped the ball.

I'm not saying T8 is bad (It could be worse. We could look like the rogues'), it's just not as... amazing as it could be.

So what about you? What do you think about T8?

I can be short, I completely agree with you. This tier isn't bad, but that concept art is simply badass and I think it would've been cooler if they had stuck with that.

That concept art is really sweet, enough that in my opinion it should be used for the final tier of the expansion. I could totally see a priest dressed like that striding into the Lich King's throne room to exact retribution for his sins...

P.S. Did anyone else get a flashback to Diablo II's Tyrael when looking at that? D:

I have a feeling it was a technical limitation.
Although I don't quite understand it.

Ever looked hard at the wing effect on the previous tier? Because the effect moves with the camera angle, it only works to imply wings from the front. Could you imagine a set of full-blown wings like that looking perfectly badass from the front only to cluster awkwardly around your body when you switch your camera to view your character from the back (like the previous tier does around your head)?

I can understand if they have that restriction why they were inclined to cut something so key to the design. I just don't understand why they're working with that restriction to begin with. It's not that you couldn't manage the above and previous with nice sturdy polygons and a clever alpha. It would look far better from the more commonly used back angle, and wouldn't be any less strange than the current is from the side.

While the concept art is undeniably cool, it would probably be hard to top with future sets if they'd completely copied it into the game. I personally really like the look of the set, especially with the matching (colour) pieces. It looks badass.

To be honest we should all be grateful that we get some of the best looking sets of all the tier items. Tiers 5,6 and 8 were all particularly cool looking compared to other classes'

I like the T8 shoulders. They remind me of a nice chilly Fresca after 18 holes of golf in 105 degree weather.

To be honest I love the priest's T8 gear.... Its my favourite set of all the T8's.

A pair of those shoulders on a troll priest just look EPIC.

This is why I've always said that they need to let us have a paperdoll for stat gear and a paperdoll for apperance. We get the stats of one, but the look of the other. It would greatly increase the varity in peoples looks AND they would be able to add stat gear in without worrying about "topping" the last set's looks.

I'm not a fan of the helm, I'm not a rogue

The rest looks decent though...honestly looks of gear never really mattered to me much beyond the shoulders

Makes me want to equip a gun... "This is a hold up! Give me all your gold, I'll take those rings too!" LoL, wtb upgrade to my 7.5 halo :( I'm a BE, my eyes glow green anyway. *shrug* But as long as the set bonuses/stats are decent looking good in the gear is just an added plus.

I agree with the OP that it would have been nice to see that concept come to life, but I definitely think we got the best lookin set as it is. I have 4/5 tier myself on my holy priest, including those AWESOME looking shoulders, and people always tell me me how "pimped-out" my toon looks. As for the helm...I actually dont mind it. It sheds the goody goody image of holy priests and makes us a bit sinister looking. Carrying Rapture (with the 81 sp enchant) on my back sure doesn't hurt the look either :)
