I'm going to disagree with what everyone is saying and say this:

You aren't supposed to use a bear/tanking pet in an instance, not because of threat generation, but because YOU LOSE DPS.

The reason Tenacity pets aren't used much in dungeons is mainly that their talents do not lend themselves to generating as much DPS as a Ferocity pet can, even before pet family skills are taken into account. It's not because they magically generate threat simply by existing, because they don't.

Yeah, I really didn't read any of the thread.

My hunter is 80 now ( 75-80 this holiday weekend woot ) and although i switched to SV and am using a wolf now I was actually pleasently surprised by my bears DPS performance on some of the normal instances my guildies ran with me to get me xp on the way to 80. Swipe and thunderclap do pretty good on the aoe trash packs. I'm in no way saying you should have a bear for raid pet, just saying while leveling up I still did 1500 dps at 75 in a BM leveling spec with my bear pet.

Now that I switched to SV and a wolf at 80 I am already hitting 2-3k though. Thats in crappy quest blues and left over level 70 epics too heh. My mage is gonna cry when my hunter gets geared up and starts beating him on dps. Oo I like SV it's tasty.

MM beats SV once you get geared up though.

Yeah, which is fine I am not married to the spec and I actually like MM too. :D

And you can always go SV for PvP once you get decent PvP gear.

Or BM before you have gear/in certain comps (3v3 anti RMP comp mostly).

I found that my cat (only one level below me) was having trouble keeping aggro when I duoed with a Warlock buddy with his Fel Guard. He had to turn off his demon's taunt ability. I guess cats just aren't good at keeping aggro?

Did you have growl on? And Fel guards gen more threat anyways.

yes, I definitely had Growl on.

I've started adding Attack Power items to my gear, and that seems to be augmenting my pet's ability to keep aggro.

The question is, why would you want your cat to tank if there's a better tank (a.k.a. the felguard) readily available?

Because the Felguard isn't much of a tank?

I've duoed with a warlock as well, and find that the demon doesn't take damage as well as a cat.

The Lock ends up spending precious seconds channeling a HoT when he could be nuking the mobs or casting more DoTs.

Meanwhile, the Hunter has an instant cast HoT for his pet which really doesn't stop him from continuing doing damage to the mob.

I had the chance to look at my leveling buddy's Demon's stats, and it cause twice as much damage as my cat, but its armor is considerably lower.
Which I guess explains why it dies often if the Lock is too busy casting damage to take time out to heal the demon pet.
