My new frost tank specFollow

#1 Jun 13 2009 at 10:23 PM Rating: Decent
As we get further in progression I decided that frost had more to offer for possibly tanking hard modes and other nasty encounters, so I switched to frost from blood (links below). I did heroic VH tongiht, and my snap aggro with HB+glyph was amazing, but my sustained threat seemed much, much lower than blood. I had a hunter usually pulling the mob right off me in the first 3 seconds, but I'd taunt it and have it for the rest of the fight. It could have just been him dpsing too hard too early in the pull, but I just got the feeling that my threat wasn't as good. Now when it comes to mitigation, this is THE spec to go with.

I'm just worried with some of our dps if I'm tanking that they would pull right off me.

Just to clarify, are we talking about Single-target threat or AoE threat?

Because Frost's AoE should be vastly superior to blood, if played properly.

I know you don't like rotations, but what would you say is your general sequence?

So, after leveling solo quite a bit and getting a few invites to run some instances, but to tank and not DPS, I tried putting together a Frost Tanking spec, because from what I've read it's not as good as Blood for ST TPS, not as good as Unholy for AoE TPS but somewhere in the middle with a little better damage than either depending on gear, and since I want to be able to do both because I don't want to have to respec I went with the Jack-of-all trades.

Here is what I came up with:
My theoretical Frost build

Let me know what you think, I tried getting all the talents I knew I needed, skipped some I though I wouldn't use and got some I just wanted to have.

I start out with a HB to put frost fever up (glyph) then I hit PS, blood strikex2 then oblit until HB is back up. Kinda like that.

Okay, a couple more questions:

1. What are the average damages of Icy Touch, Howling Blast and Obliterate? (answer this in accordance to whatever environment you want comment on-- 5 man, 10 man, 25 man, heroic, normal, hard, etc.)

2. How often do you RS as opposed to FS? (This will vary by your avoidance and personal usage, which will change things).

3. What kind of TpS are you seeing?

Looks alright, but I think the points from Endless winter and Runic Power Mastery could be more useful in Killing Machine...

Yeah... after I posted I did a little more reading and ended up changing the spec and went with this:

Armory Link

I don't have the second major glyph because the HB glyph wasn't on AH when I went to get it.

I will probably take the point I have in Endless winter and put it in Killing Machine, max it out and do 3 in Scent of Blood and then 4 in Bladed armor for my lvl 80 spec.

Also, for a "rotation" when Frost tanking, whats normal?

Yesterday when I tanked Nexus for the first time (first time tanking anything) I dropped DnD, death gripped the mana users to me, or just ran in if there were no pats or the mob was DG immune, Blood strike once while waiting for the stragglers, HB to get threat and then just applied diseases, used OB when it was up, RP Dumped with Frost Strike and HB whenever it was ready while doing Rune Strike every time it was up, I also did Pestilence and BB every once and a while, but sometimes just forgot about it since I was still trying to set up my UI to be frost tank friendly rather than Blood DPS friendly. That sound about right?
Should I worry about keeping PS/ Blood Plague up or just Frost Fever with the HB Glyph? How often if ever should I use Pestilence and Blood Boil? Since now that I'm specced for it, I will offer myself up as a tank and more than likely tank as often if not more than DPS so I wanna know how to be as good as I can be at it.

Right when you start, a bursty DPS will grab aggro from you. Tell them to give you a second.

As for sustained threat, I very much like the spec I designed for my tanking DK. Wowhead link for the signature impaired. http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#j0EZGxx0AbI0cziost0xh:kswM0V

For sustained (Boss, single mob pull) I will generally do a DG/Taunt to pull, then while we're meeting, Icy Touch x2. Icy Touch creates great RP with this, because of Chill of the Grave and the glyph. And yes, I know, everyone says to not use IT glyph, but I've found it very nice.

IT x2, PS x2, BS x2, then FS dump. (Also glyphed for FS, to save RP. Being able to spam FS is really nice, along with loads of RP for RS) After that IT x4, PS x2, repeat. To cut out a BS, you can use Blood Tap, which I glyph for to make the healer's job a bit easier.

Personally, for AoE or single, I do not use Pest. For AoE I would pull with a Taunt (Or DG a caster, and Strang a second caster), and when they're all in a group, either right at me or if they were close enough together in the initial pull, HB then DnD, BB. After that, IT and PS each one, always saving runes for when HB comes back up, and BB spamming.

For my frost AoE I'm using this rotation (HB-BB-BB-OB-HB) If I think ill need more threat start with DnD or add it before OB but I almost never need it. I can't say this is the best rotation but its been working for me.(I know a lot more about unholy then I do frost though)

Tanked another couple 5-man's... bleh I just don't like frost. I'm taking my tank spec back to blood

Ok, so I have a rather related issue. I've been tanking with frost for a long time. I've tanked 25 man naxx and 10 man naxx with no issues. But lately I find that I am having a very hard time with staying alive and taking way to much damage in VoA on Emalon. I'm not sure what's going on or if I am doing something wrong here. I take way to much damage when I tank the 4 adds. I can handle Emalon just fine without much trouble. I'll link my armory below so you can check it then get back to me. I am D capped, I have 25% dodge and 18% parry with 30.9k HP unbuffed. As far as I knew that was fine for tanking and like I said for 25 man naxx and even ten man Ulduar it seemed fine. Why am I having so many issues in VoA with the adds.

Here is my armory.

At any rate knowing my general stats can anyone give any advice or mabye a hint as to why I am having such a hard time. Thank you.

Vehem: A frost tank without Frigid Dreadplate or Imp Frost Presence? And those glyphs need to be reconsidered!

I might suggest something like this (a few points are flexible in there).

Also, you're armory is showing you in pvp gear right now. So can't help ya there.
