hey guys, ive taken a one-year hiatus (first time using that word) from WoW, and im returning soon. im gonna roll a new mage on a new realm. back in the day i had a 70 mage, pushed him through kara and ZA. i wasnt around to see northrend.
so anyway, ive been reading forums and patch notes and things, just to get up to speed. mount changes, new zones, new battlegrounds, etc. any small changes that i should be aware of? i hear mages still get no love from blizz :(
this is my intended spec btw. plz comment!

It's not too bad. You really should get Brain freeze when you're high enough for it though. I know it sounds weird having a freebie fire spell when you specialize in frost spells, but it is really helpful while leveling to help mobs go down faster, and it procs all the freaking time, even with just one point in. Focus Magic is pretty much useless soloing as you can't cast it on yourself. Magic Absorption wouldn't really be all that useful either I don't think... but that particular one is just my personal opinion, I could be wrong on it. I personally threw all of my points into frost while I leveled, but if you want to dip into Arcane that's fine too.

pigtail = right.

The improved range on Arcane spells is pointless and amplify magic sounds great, but i've probably used it 10 times in the last year.

Get Brain Freeze. It's great. It's like another instant spell that just happens to hit like a truck. Good stuff all around...

Don't get the 51 point talent - I have no idea what it's really used for. (I'm sure someone will tell me I'm an idiot) But it seems like a stun on an already frozen (Snared) target is not that helpful for PVE solo and no mage runs PVE Raids as frost... I mean even on casters or ranged targets - SOLO - the target should be dead in 3 - 4 casts - which shouldn't equate to more than a few minor hits you might take...

I also like the tier 1 talent that decreases a lot of your frost CD.....

The 51 point Frost talent is mostly used for pvp. I took it based on the recommendations of some people in my guild, and I regretted it because I only used it maybe once? It's just way too situational in pve to be useful.

Yep, no love
actually, blizz have given up on us, and now they are saying that its not balanced around 2's and got rid of it all together.
How awesome is that.

the other problem with your spec is that it won't help you at all at level 15-65 as you won't be able to use the ice lance glyph etc (which is worthless by the way), and we don't know what order/progression you plan on taking your talents (for instance, don't invest talents into arcane while leveling if you don't plan to be 100% arcane).

You are better off posting a spec for level 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, etc all the way up to 80 (which at this point you should state what the spec is for, as no one raids as frost).

Why aren't you just going back to you 70 mage? You sold the account?

If you do go frost, I would personally take out the 2 points in counterspell and put them into either brain freeze or winter's chill. I prefer fire myself, mad damage and crit even though it eats your mana faster, but thats why you can conjure some drank, right?
