Hey guys, I hit 55 and I have dual spec so I added frost spec alt to my fire spec main. In fire mode I wear all spell power and crit. In frost what is needed? Intellect for max mana for those 900 mp bliz's? Int/stamina? Is spell power really needed for aoe grind?

IIRC for Frost it's SP>Haste>Crit, with Hit more valuable until you're capped. But you won't really need to worry too much about hit until you're nearing 80.

Your gear for grinding is really inconsequential. You'll be constantly upgrading your gear so frequently that maximizing your potential typically involves getting gear that is up to date for your level more than itemizing for any particular stat. Most often you'll just be using blue quest rewards (for which the choice of which piece of gear to take is painfully obvious: the cloth reward) or in some cases an outlands green drop with crit & spellpower.

From 55-68ish you're mostly looking at outlands drops with spell power and crit with whatever int/spirit(if you roll with mage armor) you can get.

From 70-80 haste will appear on more gear which is just fine for frost. Again, it really doesn't matter for quest grinding. You're not truly looking at optimizing dps because each mob you fight will have low enough health that you gear choices often will not make a difference between requiring 4 or 5 spell casts to down an enemy.

Frost is really only useful for Solo and PvP unless you are doing severe AoE with group.

Therefor you primary stats are Int and Spirit because no trash mob will survive long enough for anything else to matter. You grab 5+ mobs, Frost Nova, then Blizz until they die. You may want to aim for gear that has nice Int AND Stam but it's really not important while you level, as mentioned.

You are lvl 55 right?

Answer: It doesn’t matter.

You should be moving through gear fairly regularly. As you are leveling, I’m going to assume you are solo questing and doing some groups.

What I would look for would be INT (More mana = less Down time) and then randomly pick up some spell power and crit.

At end game there are definite stats to stack… (i.e. Stack Hit until capped, then stack X, then Y, then… )

While leveling, you want stack what’s best. If you get a piece that increases spell power by 15, but decreases INT by 3, that’s probably a step up… Same thing with a piece that might increase crit by 25, but has slightly less spell power than your current piece.

While at end game these considerations are made for you (Hit before Spell Power) – while leveling, it’s sort-of just a guessing game. As you don’t regularly face mobs that are 3 – 4 levels above you – HIT is pretty useless. You can get away without it. (Plus it’s damn hard to find that low)

Start to look at your gear at lvl 68. Prepare for Northrend dungeons.

(Also – start using frost as your main. It is a great solo spec.)

I guess to make it easier to work out you could get an addon called "RatingBuster" by mousing over an item you can quickly see what you gain or lose in stats and there is nothing wrong at your level in having plenty of spell power and crit as a frost spec , as i know my mage gets crits every 3-4 shots on single targets and is hitting for well over 800 crit now on a regular basis .

On the topic of "frost gear", how useful is gear with +frost spell power, +fire spell power etc (if you are speccing into the right tree obviously) when compared to stuff with +int etc on it? I've seen a few of those when levelling my mage alt.

I thought they normalized all the spellpower items to one category when they made the bonus healing switch. Haven't looked at gear that level for a while. Even still, frost mages usually stick to frost spells aside from an occasional fire blast so it wouldn't matter much. Usually there is better gear available in the form of blues but if you're just buying greens that stuff is on par with the rest of your choices. Probably better than something with just base stats on it. +Arcane stuff used to be great for twink mages.
