Quick question about Combat weapon specsFollow

I've looked for this info but can't seem to find anything definitive. I've been told combat CQC spec is better, due to the better combo point generation from the 5% crit and sinister strike glyph. However, Sword spec adds energy generation via combat potency procs from the extra OH swings, correct?

The situation i'm now in is choosing between sword spec with a Reaper of Dark Souls in the MH (really nice weapon even though it's blue) and Hatestrike in the OH, or:

CQC spec with Crimson Steel MH and a LBC OH (another really nice wep despite being a blue).

If there's little to no difference i'll probably go with fist spec for aesthetics.

Nope, Sword spec gives you a chance for an extra attack when you hit, Combat Potency works with any offhand weapon.

As for comparing the two setups, sounds like a job for a spreadsheet to me, although I'd guess the fist/dagger combo would be quite a bit better. Average damage and DPS are both better on the fist, and the LPC is much faster, hence more energy from combat potency, assuming nobody normalised it when I wasn't looking.

Edit: May have misread your post, I now see you said "from the *extra* OH swings". I think sword spec procs give you an extra MH attack, so no combat potency bonus anyway. The answer of "spreadsheet" remains the same, though :)

Yeah, in terms of the spreadsheet there's next to no difference between the two sets of weapons. I guess what i'm looking for is either a spreadsheet that takes into account the differences in different weapon specs in combat, or some information on how much better CQC is over sword spec. If OH sword spec procs don't trigger combat potency, it's a much simpler decision.

Swords spec always procs MH swings, I'd thought, regardless of the hand that originally proc'd it.

The hard and fast rule for weapon specs is usually whatever you have the best weapons for. All being equal, swords falls behind simply because of the changes to windfury in 3.0 and the 6 second cooldown they put on it.

The different weapon specs, Daggers, Fists, Swords and Maces are all closely the same on dps providing you have similar quality weapons.

However the best dps spec for raiding usually wins out to be Fist MH and Dagger OH, simply down to the fact that blizzard provides us with nicer fists and daggers than they do with maces and swords. However if you have a nice pair of swords/maces etc. Better than a fist/dagger then spec accordingly, always spec around your best weapons.

As the previous posters have said both setups are probably near each other in dps, and if the spreadsheet is saying the same then choose which ever looks prettier I guess :3

Little misleading here, at least from what I understand. Only warriors received the 6 sec CD to sword spec afaik, and from what theory craft I've read on the topic, swords seem to be slightly ahead as far as spec since due to the PPM mechanics of wound poison, the extra attack will fall outside of the standard proc rate for white attacks, similar to how it behaves with all special attacks.

All the info above is correct though, it really just comes down to what your best weapons are. Specially with Ulduar, outside of the highest tiers of gear, all weapons are decently represented, although it sounds as though you're gearing a fresh 80. Will you be using your rogue in raids here soon, or are you just gearing it up for some alt Naxx runs or something of the sort?

Basically you always spec around your weapons and what's available. If there's still a question then it needs to be spread-sheeted.

What are maces? Does Blizzard even make them any more?

EDIT: There is a sick mace off thorim hard mode. NVM!

My rogue is my main alt (who i need to add to my sig actually). I have a lot more fun playing him than my ret basically so i'm gearing him up for guild 10 mans and PuG 25 mans (which are fairly common on my server). I haven't got time to play both my 80s, so Rosen is taking a back seat recently, apart from making gold by playing the AH and arena a few nights a week.

Actually i take it back partially; ret is very fun to play in competitive pvp (ret/ShDance rogue comp).
