Fire/Arcane and GearFollow

I was just wandering if my gear is good enough for me to pull of the fireball spec, I know i'm under the hit cap, but i'm going to try and convince a preist to stay as shadow so he can have misery up all the time.

Also, my gear's starting to irritate me because I don't know what I can consider as an upgrade or not, so i've pretty much stopped rolling on gear in naxx 10

Any help would be appreciated

You can always try putting your character into Rawr (linked in my signature) and see which spec will give you higher DPS. When it comes up it will put in the max amount of buffs that you can have -- if you are only doing naxx10 remember to take it down to the raid buffs that you have there with you on average to make it a fair comparison.

Your gear is still pretty low quality, there should still be some decent upgrades for you in 10man content.

You are still rocking quite a few blues.

Get rid of the 16spirit gem, the hit gem (shouldn't ever really gem for hit), and the bad green gem in your boots.
Work on your Hodir rep to get the shoulder enchant.
I don't see a belt buckle on that belt - get one and throw a 19sp gem in it.
Grab a band of channeled magic when you have the badges, it's a good ring.
Your chest isn't enchanted yet, I threw 15spirit onto my chest (apparently it is good for mages, but I am unsure)
Plenty of wand upgrades in naxx10/25
Work on the Sapphiron + Malygos next piece, it is excellent (and BIS with my JC gem through Ulduar).
T7 head is a good deal better than your helm as well.

Check out rawr, it does a pretty damn good job of saying what items are general upgrades to you through the buffs/gear that you currently have and by how much.

I have to admit, Rawr is more complicated than I thought it would be.

The "Help" files aren't too easy, but I just tossed in my char, my talent spec, and hit optimize.

What does the "Score" mean? Is that DPS or just an overall "score" like that wow-heroes thing?

*edit*
Yeah I am lost on this. Ran optimize on all specs.

Current Arcane/Frost: 5001.182

If I went FFB: 4934.966 (with, if I followed their WEIRD gem advice.. 5100)

And Fireball 4846.601.

Totally confused on this.

*edit again*

Why do they focus so much on hit gemming? I recognize my hit is kinda low but I still out DPS hit-capped people. EVERY gem they want me to use 9SP 9HR.

Point for point hit is the highest DPS stat you can get until capped. Like Anobix said though, you should never need to gem for hit. MAYBE in 10 mans, when you might not have a moonkin/s. priest. But otherwise, never. Until you hit the hit cap however, it is the most powerful stat you can get.

you need to bring up the gem list (in the drop down menu) and use the green diamond to select which gems you want it to use to optimize. get rid of the epic gems (they are not released yet, but still choosable for whatever reason). I also get rid of the ones with +hit, although I am so far over cap it doesn't matter.

Also, I do not look at the score I look at the DPS that it says below that. Also looking at the DPS score for the rotation that you will/would be using is good as well.

Forgive me, but this seems contradictory. Point for point it's the best stat until capped, but you shouldn't get more of it even if you're still short of the cap?

Or is that just more because 19sp as a bulk stat is always greater than 9sp/8hit?

It is a bit contradictory. Point for point spellpower gives better DPS than hit, once you are close to the hit cap. I would say that if you have a self-buffed 9% hit chance (for example), Fire/Arcane isn't for you as you will only be getting 12% (13% if alliance >,<) hit chance and missing 4% of your spells. If you are at 16.5% chance to hit buffed, then you are close enough to cap that you shouldn't even consider gemming for it as you will be missing on average, .5% of your spells.

I went and got a belt buckle with 19 SP in it,
The ring from badges will take me a very long time, since I only have the gear that I have from naxx 25 because of my GM's RL partners guild. And their not doing naxx any more, as far as I know.

I kinda NEED to gem for hit otherwise i dont come up to the cap, and as I've said before im still working on that preist.

Been working on Hodir rep for the best part of a month and I've pretty much given up (haven't done their dailies in a week)

I don't really know where to start with Rawr, it confused the hell outa me, just a big wall of numbers jumping at me.

Then maybe if you are at a point where you NEED to gem for it, then you aren't at a gear level yet that supports Arcane/Fire. I did the dailies for a couple of weeks then bought the last 10k rep through the marks of hodir (or whatever they are) and spent a couple of hours scouring for shards.

As for Rawr it is pretty easy.

Import your character (shouldn't be hard to do that).

That will import your spec, gear, etc. You can go through the buffs tabs and check which ones you have usually and which you do not.

You can go under fight options and change fight lengths to better match how long your fights are... for Naxx10 I normally put the fight length on average around 3 minutes, of course some fights last longer than others.

After that you can use the drop down menu on the right side to go between the slots and see what stacks up where. You can click the diamonds to put green diamonds next to gear that you have including with gems/enchants/etc for the optimizer which you can run from one of the things in the file menu. Putting Optimizer at about halfway through does a good enough job to re-gem/re-enchant/switch out gear to make it as good as you can get with what you have in your inventory.

Other than that it is about trickling down more fight mechanics stuff if you are so inclined, the % that the person you have Focus Magic on will have it up (another mage should have it up for a significant portion of the time, for instance), and movement % etc (I usually don't bother as that is really random).

Looking at the main gear page gives you an idea of what your dps would be with the various rotations that are listed. You can hover over a lot of them to know which one it is using.

EDIT: Read the new thread that I just made on how-to use Rawr.mage.

I was just wandering if, since you told me it was a good idea to get rid of the green gem in my boots, to get a different meta gem.
The 25 SP and 2% intellect one, to be exact. Or would this just be a bad move?

because if i remove the gem from my boots and gem for 19 SP, then i lose the meta gem bonus, but the 25 SP and 2% int requirements are 3 red gems, which is a very good thing

chaotic skyflare diamond, always.

If you need a blue gem and have blue slots use a purified twilight opal.

You really prefer that one the most? I'm going with the SP/Int one currently due to not only the Red Gem love(tempted to sport 100% SP gems) but more int is always nice and 25SP is top notch. I admit the +crit and crit damage is nice but does it beat out the static SP boost? 21 crit rating seems meh but I am unsure.

*edit*
said reg, not red lol.

the 21crit is effectively .5% crit, but the 3% crit damage is the nice part.
