Hi all,

Yesterday I decided to hop on my priest. Since all of my talent points had been refunded, I decided to give the Disc tree a try. I only PVE and mostly solo at that.

I'd like to give healing instances a shot and was wondering if I'd be better served changing my talents(via dual spec)for healing purposes. I think I'd like to give the Disc tree a try for healing also.

This is the current spec I've put together http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Undermine&n=Broslice

I know my glyphs need to be changed for my current spec.

I also welcome any criticism and suggestions regarding my current leveling spec.

Thank you all in advance.

If you have easy access to Northrend gems, that would be a good place to start. Scatter some of these or these throughout your existing gear for a substantial upgrade (at least replace the spirit and stam gems with something contemporary and proper- mp5 is a better choice than spirit for disc if you need to bolster your regen). If the investment into upgrading gems is too costly, I wouldn't sweat it too much, there's plenty of time to upgrade to Northrend gear.

Just on a quick glance of your gear and spec, it appears that you should be fine healing instances while you level. If you are new to healing groups, remember that your group function is healing and your mana should be priortized for this. I've talked to many "newish" healers since the dual spec that had problems because they jumped in the fight early, figuring to switch to healing when needed. While this may be a sound tactic with a group that you are familiar with, it can turn ugly if you are pugging and the group has a mishap.

Enjoy healing! It normally is a thankless job if done right, but smooth runs are reward enough.

I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but I have played a disc priest that was primarily a solo/PVE char with an occasional foray into an instance with a PUG. I found myself using penance and flash heal as my primary heals, along with renew. You have 4 points in divine fury, which does nothing for any of the heals I just mentioned so I would use those 4 points in the discipline tree instead; 1 point in aspiration to complete it with the remaining 3 points going to either grace (to increase your healing) renewed hope (again to help your healing) or enlightenment (spell haste is always a good thing, along with additional mp5 from the increase in spirit).

One glyph should be glyph of penance to reduce the cooldown of penance to 6.4 secs (provided you finish off the apiration talent). This will help with your healing and DPS.

Thank you both for your comments. I found them quite helpful.

Glyph of Shield. For Discipline healing, no other Glyph comes close to the power of Glyph of Shield, although Glyph of Penance is very solid too.

For your talents: yes, it's a leveling spec. Obviously there are things in it you won't have for healing... Spirit Tap is the obvious example. I disagree with Bitter about Divine Fury. Firstly, Greater Heal is a much better heal to use than Flash. Secondly, DF also provides a substantial bonus to the Holy nukes. I have Divine Fury even in my raiding build.

As you get more talent points, fill out the top part of the Disc tree. For a dedicated healing build, a Discipline priest takes every talent from Rapture up. Focused Will is of questionable utility for a dedicated healing build. It's fine while leveling and for PvP, but I think other things are better at the top end.

I wouldn't discount spirit too much. Particularly while leveling and relying on Spirit Tap, spirit is a good stat. I do think you should re-gem away from Stamina while leveling. Stamina is good in gems only when you're getting hit and your options are limited-- that is, PvP. You need some amount of stamina to survive casual damage in PvE, but not enough to require gemming for it.

I came to the same conclusion, I'm not going to respec at this time, but future points will be allocated as suggested.

Unmodified, flash heal is not as mana efficient as greater. Improved flash was already taken as a disc talent, combine this with the glyph of flash heal and you've improced the mana efficiency to the point that's it's on a par with greater healer; you also have a better crit chance for targets under 50% health when using flash.

Just my impression but I've always thought that greater heal was the bread-and-butter spell in the holy tree, and pw:s/penance/flash heals are the basis for a disc priest who is healing.

And as far as who's older, Eisenhower was President when I clocked in; do the math :)

Hmmm... How long was Eisenhower President when you clocked in? He became President the year I was born.

A good r/l friend, my wife and I are in a static 5 man with a pair of college age kids (currently up to BRD). We all have a great time. It's one of the best things about this silly game - age really doesn't matter.

I WIN! or is it I lose?

Actually this just proves that WOW is only played by older people.

Oh, I kinda missed that... swing and a miss.
Yeah, Spirit gems do perform double-duty while Spirit Tap is still in place.

BTW, LBJ for me... you guys are old farts- but you won't see this because the print is too small =D

To add to the age discussion, my dad (who got me into this game) clocked in during FDR, and I came along during LBJ.

OT: I have a raiding Disc/shadow depending on healer availability. I mostly use penace, flash, and renew spells. I almost never use greater heal. Since they took away downranking, I quit using it and went from holy to disc.
