Since the lockpicking FAQ seems to be dead I'm at a bit of a loss.

I just dusted off my rogue and started leveling him up again. First thing I did was run to Winterspring and get my lockpicking up to 300, then went back to Outlands. Using the pickpocketing macro, I have yet to get a lockbox in Outlands. Started in Hellfire at 62 and am about to hit 65 in Zangermarsh. None of the Orcs or demons in HF and none off the Nagas or Umbrafens in Zangermarsh. I know my pickpocket macro is working since I was using it in Winterspring. I also know these mobs used to have lockboxes since I had a few sitting in my bank. Did something change or am I just missing something?

Also, the trainer said their was a place with lockboxes in Zangermarsh, anyone know where this is?

I don't know about Zangar, but there are some boxes in Nagrand, at the burning blade camp in the Southeast corner that might be around the same skill level. Unless Blizzard removed them.

The lockboxes are in southern Zangar below the Twin Spire Ruins right where that Umbrafen camp is. They look like little yellow wicker baskets. There might be some at the boarder to Terokkar, but it's been a long time since I capped my lockpicking.

Junkboxes definitely drop off humanoids in Hellfire. My rogue leveled to 62 off the orcs and demons there, and got Heavy and Strong Junkboxes off the enemies. They seemed to have around a 10-15% drop rate or so.

Also, checking wowhead it looks like the taskmaster naga don't drop them. THe Sirens seem to be the only Naga that reliably can be pickpocketed. Feralfen Druids seem to be the best in Zangarmarsh.

They started dropping last night. I just found it weird that I had not received a single one through most of HFP and half of Zang. However, I thought any mob that could be pickpocketed had a chance to drop a box, guess I'll have to check next time.

Awesome location, thanks. A lot of boxes and fairly quick respawns. You could easily go from 300 to 375 (assuming they are still green until then) in this area in less then 20 minutes. I picked about 10 without a single skillup before I remembered that the skill was level based. I wanted to pick the other 5 or 6 in the immediate area just for the hell of it.

Edit: Shift key hates me.

A good place to pickpocket lockboxes is from the Gan'arg miners and succ. overseers in the two Hellfire mines.

I just wandered through both doing nothing but PP once each hour or so ... usually good for three to five boxes a run.

Once you get caught up, you just macro PP with your lead attack on mobs, and make a point of always saving five boxes to use immediately when you gain a level ... and that will be the end of insane lockbox grinding. Permanently macroing PP in will also nearly double your mob silver loot ... a good thing.

I know the point has been made, but just a quick observation on what the RNG can do to you. Really make you scratch your head sometimes.

I'm in HF now and after seeing tessae's post I ran through the mine twice two nights ago and got zero boxes. I hadn't done the pre-req for the quest yet, which I did last night so I ran through it again. There was a priest in there so even though I went through twice I probably only picked the equivalent of one and a quarter times through (there is a quest and a follow-up to kill the boss). I got eight boxes.

That's a big difference, and I don't expect it will happen too often that way. But so often I see people refusing to believe it's simply the RNG and there must be a bug when something really out-of-the-ordinary happens.

And I know - random is random.

EDIT: Just to add to the randomness of random. The night before I did manage to get three Strongs off of the orcs, along with a few Heavys. I sell the Heavys to the Insane in the Membrane folks, and opened the Strongs. Was I surprised to find a purple dagger in one!

You should try Ramps, Blood Furnace etc.

My 62 rogue could stealth through most of the instances and pickpocket away. Im 70 now and still have a bank full of level 300 boxes to open. Im around 355 i think and its still yellow.
