Ok, I'm what you would definitely call a new Mage. I've certainly done my research, however, and am having a strange problem.

We all know that frost is more of a utility or PvP tree than raw raiding DPS.
I'm currently dual specced into Frost, and FFB. Whenever I raid or do a heroic, I start out in FFB, do a boss or two, look at my DPS in contempt, and switch to frost, at which point my DPS goes up by anywhere from 500 to 1K. By all rights, this should not be happening.
I know I do a couple of 'tricks' with frost, like always ghosting an Icelance onto my FoF combos. I always use the BF proc. In a boss, I have my elemental and images out while IV is up.

In FFB, I use LB, Scorch x1 (I have the glyph), FFB. HS procs, I use it immediately after my current cast is done. I let LB detonate then put it back on the mob immediately.

I know my gear isn't quite tits yet, and on my frost tree I'm still searching out an affordable Glyph of Molten Armour, but even so, shouldn't FFB destroy frost in DPS?
I'm not even talking about AoE fights. FFB can sometimes push past Frost in aoe since I double stack . . . ah hell, the fire ground dot, as well as throwing down a blizzard if I really wanna scorch 'em.

Is it glyphs? Some weird gear problem? Spec?
Thanks for the help guys.

How people set up their gear and utalizing their spec well is far more important than the specific spec in general. The big thing for a FFB spec is the crit rating. FFB is heavily heavily dependant on crit for DPS. There's 3 or 4 different talents that come into place, and the crit multiplier for Frostfire bolt is huge, but the non-crit damage is disappointing. Frost specd mages have a very different set of priorities. Play what you know and select gear appropriate to your playing style. But mostly have fun.

your meta gem is terrible, grab a CSD instead.

Overall it is hard to say what is going wrong and why you are doing better with one spec than the other. FFB benefits a lot from raid buffs, more crit, etc makes it even more powerful. It also benefits from longer fights. In 5mans the fights are way too short for you to take advantage of molten fury range and such and really have your dps shine. Your gear level is improving but still is not quite good. For instance, your crit chance with fire is quite low still. I would guess you sit at around 21% self buffed crit (26% with scorch). I sit at ~40% with crit debuff up w/o raid buffs. That % makes a pretty huge difference overall. You are a bit more balanced for haste gear than crit, which frost does benefit from, and in 10mans when you have less raid buffs to spread/share the two may come out to be somewhat even because of the gear/buff levels. In a 25 I could imagine FFB coming quite a bit ahead.

I'd like to thank you for that gem. Caught me by surprise and I snorted my ice coffee.
