it was already affected by resiliance...

the real issue is that now stuff like pain suppression, nether protection, shield wall etc... will reduce it's damage :S MASSIVE nerf o.0

Meh, the funny thing about the constant warlock nerfing is that I still don't feel it.

Immolate and UA are self exclusive but I still think the damage is good. Sure it's a loss but my lock is new and I wasn't there to do both spells, so I can't feel a loss, and when I play my lock it works nicely as is.

Fear nerf seemed like a low blow to me, but then I went to BG's and kept abusing fear, I'm almost thinking the fear nerf may be bugged because I've been able to do much more than 10% damage to players in BGs with fear not breaking.

If anything I felt a bit of a blow when demonic sacrifice was "improved" because if your demon has less HP than that you don't get a bubble, and now it has a 1-min c/d. But it's not so bad, it's easier to use than before and in bgs I don't need to keep summoning voids over and over to have more sacs, the cooldown hurts a bit, but there's convenience in keeping the void alive so the trade-off isn't bad.

This seems like a big nerf and all but... are you suuuure it will effectively change the way you play?

The main problem was that Chaos Bolt ignored resilience. When one class (spec even) can get around the major stat that is supposed to let characters live longer in PvP with a heavy hitter like this, you're bound to have problems.

We didn't want to nerf the burst damage because it was finally hitting for a reasonable amount. But it didn't feel fair to have it ignore resilience. The other damage reducers didn't feel like a big problem either way. It still ignores resistance and absorptions, which is technically all the tooltip said in the first place.

Ghostcrawler wrote:
EDIT: As it turns out, Chaos Bolt does NOT ignore resilience. When the developers went to make this change, they found out that the resilience bypassing was just a myth. They still thought making the change to have CB not bypass other damage reduction affects was an appropriate change. I try to stay on top of all of the changes my team makes, but it's a big game and we typically make a lot of changes every day. The mistake was mine, and I do apologize for any confusion.

Ghostcrawler wrote:
I edited my previous post to correct my mistake. Resilience is not treated as a damage reduction effect. Nevertheless, the team still felt like the 3.1.3 change to Chaos Bolt was appropriate. You can find more details above or in the related Chaos Bolt thread.

  • They didn't want to nerf Chaos Bolt because "it was finally hitting for a reasonable amount."
  • They "fix" Chaos Bolt because they think it bypasses resilience which was never the intention.
  • They find out that Chaos Bolt never bypassed resilience.
  • They decide to keep the nerf because they think Chaos Bolt does too much damage.

  • Am I the only one seeing an issue with line no. 1 and 4?

yeah, realised that a million years ago... but to quote loads of other locks and myself... "blizzard can't go 1 patch without nerfing locks"

the only REAL benefit imo of CB in pvp was that it worked through % damage reduction abilities... changing that is just gonna **** up destro pvp again...

    CB:
    7% base mana
    2.5 second cast
    1429-1813 Fire damage
    71.39% of Spell Power

    SB:
    17% base mana
    3 second cast
    690-770 Shadow Damage
    102.8% of Spell Power

    [EDIT]

    Just for comparison value.

3K SP would make SB do the same amount, for slightly more mana, no?

also if you ever went far enough for chaosbolt you'd never use shadowbolt you'd use incinerate as it'd do more damage

I only glanced at the talents, but don't all the ones that boost SB more-or-less boost CB by the same amount?

The only one actually included in the numbers I posted was the one that boosts SB's SP coefficient.

ya i noticed you only boosted SBs numbers.. and even those you got wrong. (effort doing it properly right now, middle of raiding).. but you missed out some talents for SB and you missed out all for chaosbolt it'd seem in your maths.

I just took the coefficients from WoWWiki. All the other data is straight off the default tooltips.

How do they compare after the talents?

Got it. Well, that's what one would hope from a 51 point talent...

Then again, Vigor used to be a rogue end-tier one, so Blizz doesn't always take this to heart.

And, because I've been wondering this for a long time and I kinda just breached the subject, I'll just ask this here:

How is the DpS when Meta...morphed? Does it increase by a sizable amount? You lose the pet when you enter demon form, right?

no you don't. read the ability. meta-form is just a 20% increase in damage delt, when fully talented you can equate the meta form to being roughly a 7% increase in your damage across an entire fight.. now you can go it if you want but it's a crap dps spec to go. 0/13/55(+3) and 53/0/18 are the top dps specs currently, with 0/41/30 coming up a close 3rd

That's kinda what I figured. When they first announced it, I thought it was ridiculous. I mean, making the end-talent of a tree disregard the entire tree's purpose...

well actually back then it was fine like that, the ability was VERY over-powered, it healed you to full and stopped you from using spells other than a few special ones but it made your melee attacks stupidly powerful so effectively it turned you into an over-powered warrior for 30 seconds

Not to mention the AOE Shadow Bolt thing which was just awesome.

look on the bright side; destro locks are the only caster that can reliably kill a DK under AMS or a rogue using CloS. that in itself has won a number of arena games for me.

plus its just awesome in a ********** you rogue/dk!" kind of way. shows them that maybe they arent as high and mighty as they thought they were.

I do hate the Cloak, but when a Rogue pops it, he's usually in my face in no time. If he lets me get off the 2.5-second cast (+ delayed casting time from hits), he's a poor Rogue and deserves the spanking.

Yeah, right, it's a PvP nerf, BUT...how much is going to affect PvE? If at all.
