gemming ArP/Exp/Str?Follow

#1 May 24 2009 at 9:28 PM Rating: Decent
i was just wonderin how useful armor penetration is to a ret pally...Most of the ulduar drops that ive gotten have massive amounts of it, does it even effect divine storm or crusader strike? i think it does but i need to know for sure. Also, i just regemmed a few strength gems for expertise but it seems like my dps went down cuz of the lack of strength...also just replaced deaths bite (naxx10) with stormedge (ulduar10)... dont think that would drop it any tho. Any advice from someone that knows what they are talkin about would help me out alot.. even posting your armory so i can check out the way u gem. thanks :)

here is a link to my armory if u wanna check it out http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Lethon&n=Arkiru
remember im dranei (heroic presence) +1% to hit, i dont have a problem with it.

Always gem for Strength unless you need another color for your Meta gem requirement. ArP only affects your melee hits. Don't gem for it ever. It's a Warrior/Rogue stat that you should avoid if possible.

Edit: If you're still unsure how much it will affect your dps check out recount. Look at how much of your damage is melee than compare it to how much is Holy/Spell based (which avoids armor completely). Melee will probably be number one on dps but it'll only be around 20-30% of your overall damage). Increasing your AP affects both your white hits and spell power (when talented) as does Crit.

As Athor said, however if you're below hit cap then gem for that, then strength.

arpen does in fact affect crusader strike and divine storm, as these are both physical damage, in addition to melee swings.

It does NOT affect our holy damage: seal procs accompanying melee, DS or CS; Judgements; Consecrate; Exorcism; or Holy Wrath.

Estimates are that for most geared ret pallys, arpen affects less than 40% of our damage potential.

So while it does do something--its far worse than expertise, haste, crit, hit as a secondary stat.

SO yes, it does suck that nearly all plate in uld 10 has arpen...all the good pally gear is in 25.

ArPen is worse than Haste?

They're fairly equal, but Haste is more slightly more valuable than ArPen for Ret.

I have a fair amount of ArPen at the moment, but most of that just comes from the gear upgrades I have gotten from Ulduar 10... ¬_¬

Other than lowering your melee swing time (more white hits, more seal procs), what does haste do to Rets? Armor penetration increases damage done by two abilities (Crusader Strike, Divine Storm) and white hits. I mean, I'm not calling bullsh*t here, but I am curious.
