Always asked to tank?Follow

#1 May 15 2009 at 5:14 AM Rating: Decent
i have three toons, all tanks ... I noticed a trend emerging, when any thing went wrong it was the tanks fault, you know the kind of thing I'm sure. Well I thought let's have a break for tanking for a while, those DK look fun and dpsing will be a change!

Or so I thought, heh, soloed until I could enter WOTLK content and started to do some instances, to date I've done about 25... 23 as a make shift tank. Iss this common for all DKs or is my server just lacking in tanks?

Replace 'tank' with 'healer' and 'DK' with 'random healer class,' you'll get the same thing.

It's not just tanks and DK's. DPS are typically easy slots to fill and people want other slots filled fast, regardless of how well you fit.

So, as a tank, or healer, be prepared to take flak in PuGs, regardless if things are your fault.

Though I do have a couple questions:

Were you tanking in Frost presence?
Were you allowing mobs to get behind you and stay behind you?
Do you have any tanking gear?

I'm not accusing, just asking.

If you're like me you'll get a decent tank set, then start saying "I'll only go if i can lot dps gear". eventually you get a full dps AND tank set, but you dont tell people you can tank unless someone totally fails at it.
We had a tank utterly fail at adds on ignas so i switched to tank gear and handled that, but my guild likes me on dps because i also put out over 5k on patchwork. (dont know my XT dps because its unreliable wit hgravity wells and ****)

Luckily, not had a problem with tanking with my DK even without a tank build, picked up some tanking drops that no one wanted so that helps. I always make clear first though, that I will be needing if any dps bits that drop, seems fair to me.

The moans are always annoying, it's easier to blame the tank or healers for deaths/wipes than accept that you have made a mistake (although tankks and healers make mistakes too!).

QFT.

Reminds me of a time I was healing H OK as Disc on my priest. Now, in the beginning things are going ok, but the Tank sometime suddenly loses a huge chunk of health. Tank gets peeved and yells at me, and I tell them what I see and ask them why he's taking so much damage. No one know, but tells me that I just need to overheal (and apparently not heal other people in the party at all). Long story short, tank dies from one of the trash pulls and I get screamed at.

After then run, I find out one of the casters has a 6 second cast spell that takes out half of a person's total health.

Meaning, that people should have probably been interrupting it and not just trying to make me heal through it >.<

My main spec is dps, I am much better at dps. That said, I basically tank every week for my guild. I'm fairly sure I've tanked every single encounter in Ulduar so far, with the exception of X2. Now some nights I don't have to, but some nights a tank doesn't sign on and I'm the first person that is expected to tank.

In pugs, I sometimes get asked if I tank, but I am now getting to the point where I don't want to tank anything unless it's run by my guild.

Well, right now pretty much everything went to AoE tanks + AoE DPS + AoE heals. I can't think of how great an amount of mental retardation can be required to AoE wrong. Or if it's even possible to AoE wrong on purpose. So for this reason it's very unlikely that anything can be the DPS fault anymore.

Sure, you should go with kill order instead of AoE when you need to make the healing easier to control but when you just spam AoE you top the damage meters. And if a dpser is on the top of the damage meters he is the best ever and the best of the group and is doing everything right and everyone should bow to him (sarcasm). So DPS can never be wrong unless they are low in the damage meters (more sarcasm).

Have to say I was a happy DPS on my DK, it was fun, didn't have to worry about other people just kill the mobs around me. Then my guild lost a load of tanks and guess who was volunteered to become a guild main tank... Me.

It's taken 3 weeks for me to get into T7/7.5, get rid of all my blue tanking gear in favour of stuff that actually looks good. But there's one thing I will say, I'm enjoying my DK more as a tank, especially now that that the annoying mage who doesn't know what aggro is and kept pulling off me can't keep up with me now, life is such a breeze. I haven't really noticed any drawbacks with DK tanking and it's extremely rare that a mob goes for someone else now.

I have found though that despite the fact I'm doing my job as a tank it is usually the tank that gets the blame for the wipe. Just one thing I'd like to point out for everyone ---- When the tank dies first.... IT'S THE HEALERS FAULT :) and when the healer dies first .... IT'S THE TANK'S FAULT.

And when a DPS dies during a battle it's the DPS's fault. If a mob has cleave... then don't stand in front of it, that's the tanks job. If a mob makes a break and attacks you my DPS friends then the first thing you gotta ask is... are you attacking the right target, or did you fail to watch your aggro.

I as a tank rarely let a dps die to anything I have control over but my priorities in tanking are : Healer, healer, me, healer, me, DPS.

While all that is generally true, tanks can die because of tank's fault, and raids can wipe due to tank's fault.

It's tank's fault if you die for not making good use of your cooldowns. I make it a point to never ever die with my cooldowns up. Sure, it would be easy to say that no encounter really requires shield wall, but if you're a warrior and you die with shield wall not on cooldown, 1000 shames will fall on you (and if i'm in that raid you can bet that I will ask you if your shieldwall is on cooldown when you die...).

Then it's also tank's fault to wipe a raid for not doing proper placement and transition of a boss. But that's too obvious. :P

Oh I'm always playing with my cooldowns. And I even help the healers out by spamming Death Strike once I have a nice comfortable Aggro lead, I know that the healers have tough job, having a healer for my other lvl 80.

I actually would recommend that tanks try healing on an alt just to give them an idea of just how much a healer may have to cope with. And I think I know my cooldowns and what they are... Unholy tank so it's urm... uh oh yeah Bone Shield and Icebound Fortitude. I agree the tank, if he's a good tank, does have to do everything possible to help the healer out, stacking avoidance and using cooldowns is essential. But back to the point I definitely do not regret having been volunteered to be one of my guilds main tanks.

Yeesh, bad memories of the last guild I was in with my DK tanking. It was a rather spectacular failure on Anub'rekhan (10-man), during which fully half the raid would get the Locust Swarm (I was kiting him around the edge outside the slime, no clue how that happened) and they decided that it was my fault. After the fourth wipe to the same cause, I left the raid. Only went back on my DK once since then, to drop the guild, only to discover they'd kicked me. Kind of a relief, actually.

Long story short, I hate the part of tanking that makes me the *****, but the attention-deprived 5-year-old in me loves taking all the heals.
