Which weapon is better? (Combat Rogue)Follow

#1 May 15 2009 at 3:00 AM Rating: Decent
Hi
So, I'm a combat rogue and I've been using this weapon for my MH since lvl 19:

Stinging Viper
One-Hand Mace - Level 19
Damage 30-57 - Speed: 2.80
15.5 Damage Per Second
Chance on hit: Poison target for 7 Nature damage every 3 seconds for 15 seconds

Now that I'm lvl 34, I think that I really need to change it, so I did a quest that got me this:

Windstorm Hammer
One-Hand Mace
Damage 35-65 - Speed 2.10
24.- Damage per second
+6 Strength
+6 Stamina
--------------
At first, I thought that the Windstorm Hammer would be much better than the Stinging Viper, but then when I equipped it, the melee damage in my character's menu changed from 101-129(with the Stinging Viper) to 90-120.
Now I'm really confused, I know that a combat rogue is better off with a really slow weapon in the MH, but the difference in the DPS between the 2 weapons is big. Shouldn't the Windstorm Hammer give me more damage?
Oh, and should I let the Melee damage meter in my character's menu determine whether I should use a certain weapon or not?

Please help me with this, thanks a lot in advance.

Windstrom Hammer has an average damage of 50, Viper at 43.5. Several of your core attacks will use average main-hand damage in their calculation. Ergo, Hammer wins.

Be clear about this: The speed of the weapon is a byproduct of the itemization rules. What you're looking for is highest average weapon damage (NOT dps).

The damage just shows lower because the mace is a lot faster. While each white hit may be smaller, the overall dps will be a big increase. And like Therion said, your special attacks will also hit harder.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=myRealmName&n=myCharacterName

Where myRealmName = the name of your realm and myCharacterName = the name of your toon.

The damage you see there is a damage of a single autoattack hit with your weapon. This is:
weapon_damage + AP/14 * weapon_speed.
The new weapon has higher weapon_damage, but is much faster, so weapon_speed has lower value (should be called something other than "speed"). For Autoattack, single hit with your new weapon will have lower damage - as you see. But you will hit much more often, so it really gives more damage for autoattack.

Sinister strike damage is different (weapon_speed is set to 2.4). But that is a different story.
