Starting gear for pvpFollow

Simple question what should my gear be to start pvp? I will be healing. I will start with battlegrounds and then move up to arena if I feel good enough. I have a tailor/enchanter (450/450) and he's a JC/miner to become. Just wondering, also, if during your beginings you got owned or was it fairly simple to stay alive? Feel free to give your anecdotes.

Owned. Owned hard.

A problem that is both mechanical (cloth armor) and strategic (people focus fire the healer first). Both of these will be remedied by practice.

There are several tiers of PvP gear.
In order of lowest to highest; Savage, Hateful, Deadly and Furious. You have a choice between two different sets within each tier. The Mooncloth set which is for Healing and has Spirit, and the Satin set which is for DPS and has Critical Strike. There is also a offshoot set of gear which on par with the Hateful tier; the Titan-forged set which has Haste.

Savage is available with Emblems of Heroism.
Hateful is available with Emblems of Valor in Dalaran, or Honor in your Home City.
Titan-forged is available for Wintergrasp Tokens.
A few Deadly accessories are available for Honor in your Home City.

Unless you have a ton of Emblems of Heroism lying around (and you might), I would skip right to the Hateful/Titan-forged Tier. It's up to you to decide how you want to gear within that tier, although I advise you to consider a mix. If not for the fact being well rounded is rewarded in PvP, then the fact the set bonuses count per set. Meaning 2 pieces of Satin and 2 pieces of Mooncloth yield the +50 resilience set bonus twice.

First things first, though.
If your not human you should get a trinket which allows you to remove impairing effects (Stun,Fear, etc). There is one version with 84 resilience available for 30k+ Honor in your Hometown, a version with 64 resilience available for 250 Stonekeeper Shards at the wintergrasp vendor, and several versions available for 25 Wintergrasp tokens that also have a permanent boost to spellpower, haste or hit rating. Any of these are fine, but it's bread and butter for PvP and should be gotten ASAP.

Heh, sometimes the opposition aren't quick to realise the healers from the dps-ers so keep back and you might just save the odd battle.

Get into WG plenty, if you're lucky its possible to pick up a lot of honor in just 1 battle, and the WG marks can get some good gear - currently the robe (40 marks) and belt (15 marks) are the same item level as Deadly items, there's also the trinkets and the stone keepers shards for pvp gems and head glyphs.

If you've only just dinged 80 then you can make some of the tailoring pvp pieces. I don't think there's any way to get pvp-specific items for the weapon slots (wand too) unless you play arena.

Definitely make the Frostsavage set and wear that. It's actually not much worse than the Savage PVP gear. The only issue with it for a priest is it's got no Spirit. You can make up for that by filling in your PVE gear in other slots. As a side note, although I'd never spec Holy if I was getting serious about PVP, you may want to consider it for battlegrounds/Wintergrasp while you're gearing up, since the crit on the Frostsavage set ends up being a nice regen stat for Holy, plus Circle of Healing is great in battlegrounds as long as you have Holy Reach. But eventually you'll need to spec Disc for the efficiency, survivability, and cackle-inducing fun.

As others have said, Wintergrasp is great honor. Do that as often as you can, and make sure you do the dailies as well for shards (for PVP head and shoulder enchants). My experience so far has been that the best way to get honor from battlegrounds is with the marks turn-in, which you can do at the same guy who gives the bg daily. Just go round-robin and gather marks and turn them in. The honor from battlegrounds themselves, especially if you lose a lot, takes a long time to accrue without that boost.

Buy what Wintergrasp gear you can with WG tokens, then fill in with Hateful/Deadly from honor. I'd gem/enchant for resilience at first. With my old lady reflexes I didn't start feeling comfy on my priest until I had about 700 resilience. After that it was really fun - I wasn't used to it being hard for people to kill me, and it cracked me up. Smiley: clown

And yes, I'd say get used to getting beat up. Healers get focused always and you can expect to die a lot until you get more resilience/stamina/practice.

Edit. Hee. I actually asked if he was a priest. Because I forgot what forum I was in. More. Tea. Please.

Nice thanks for all the replies, I'm currently 76 (very near 77) and I will be doing about 1 level per day so sunday-ish I'll be 80. OK so I'll be in every WG while doing the most BG's possible. I'll also make some pieces with my tailor just to get started.

DING 80, ok I'm going to make the savage set like right now. Just to get this right the first time, what's my priorities for gems and enchants (should I get the +16 res gem, for example, or the +8 res +12 stam gem). Well its now time to save some asses in PVP :)

The downside of Frostsavage gear is that there isn't any sockets.

But for future referance,
You should favor resilience until you start to feel comfortable, but always take the socket bonus under consideration (basically, what teacake said). While your earning the honor/tokens for socketable gear, you'll have enough time to see how you feel in the Frostsavage set and make your future gemming determinations from there.

For the record, There's a +20 Resilience gem called Kharmaa's Grace available from your wintergrasp vendor for a very affordable 20 Stonekeeper's Shards. You can only have one on your gear, but it's an awful nice one to have.

As far as enchants go, there's a ton of options, but I'll go ahead and list what's popular.

Feet- Tuskar's Vitality (+8% movement speed increase, +15 stamina) - Enchanting
Feet- Icewalker (+12 hit rating, +12 critical strike) - Enchanting
Chest- Enchant Chest Exceptional Resilience (+20 resilience) - Enchanting
Back- Enchant Cloak Spell Piercing (+35 spell penetration) - Enchanting
Head- Arcanum of Dominance (+20 resilience, +29 spellpower) - WG Vendor (SkS)
Leg- Earthen Leg Armor (+40 resilience, +28 stamina) - Leatherworking
Weapon- Enchant Weapon - Exceptional Spellpower (+50 spellpower) - Enchanting
Hands- Enchant Gloves Exceptional Spellpower (+28 spellpower) - Enchanting
Hands- Enchant Gloves Precision (+20 Hit Rating) - Enchanting
Wrist- Enchant Bracers Greater Spellpower (+23 spellpower) - Enchanting
Wrist- Enchant Bracers Major Stamina (+40 stamina) - Enchanting
Shoulder- Inscription of Dominance(+15 resilience,+23 spellpower)- WG Vendor (SkS)
Shoulder- Greater Inscription of the Gladiator(+15 resilience,+30 stamina)- Hometown PvP Vendor(Honor)

There's varying degrees of pricy-ness here. I wouldn't blow 300+ gold on an Earthen Leg Armor for a leg armor your going to replace soon. But things like Enchant Gloves - Exceptional Spellpower are ridiculously cheap and should be smacked on any gloves you can get your mitts on.
