I hesitate to post this, since it makes me look retarded, but i actually did the first 7 bosses of 25uld last night with my ret libram on :(.

It is Flame Leviathan, we use an Elemental Shaman to heal up top when needed. Kind of a poor example to use. Also remember its easy mode content, but it is a fair point. If your mana regen is to the point that it is a non issue then why gem for it? Because, only hard mode matters and Steelbreaker hitting for 25k on avg melee swing sucks the will to live mana out of you. 2% intellect in no way provides enough bonus to beat out insightful on this.

hi all just a quick question. I'm new to the forums but def not new to pally healing. but why do you all prefer so much crit and haste over mp5?

Two other posters covered it but point for point Intellect flat out beats Mp5 for mana regen.

Stacking int through gemming allows you to remove the need for Mp5 (since Int is a greater source of mana regen, while providing +sp and crit and a larger mana pool). So you can focus on crit, and haste. Illumination is still extremely powerful, and was always made to favour Holy Light, which in Wotlk should see a heavier roll in your spell rotation (especially once you get past T7). Haste on healers is nice as well (as long as you have the mana regen to support it, which you will with Int + Crit). For example my FoL raid buffed is below 1.1 seconds to cast instead of base 1.5. So my healing output is increased etc.

This will be changed at some point, but for right now and at least for the forseeable future of the next 3 months it will remain the same so gearing Mp5 at 80 is basically going for a suboptimal mana regen stat at the expense healing output and mana regen.

I'll ask...

Why did you choose that spec? 51/2/18. I understand the Sanctity of Battle part, but why no Imp. Conc aura and Aura Mastery? Surely there is a silence ability from an Ulduar boss.

I tried to look for you ingame but that came up squat.

Aura mastery isnt exactly awesome, only one boss I know of has a silence ability, Ignis. And with Aura Mastery you could avoid it one time and have to deal with it the 20 other times he casts it.

Improved Conc Aura... how often are you getting hit? And the bonus that talent provides is negligible at best.

*VOTES YES* Sticky this please!

I know I give you a hard time Bhodi, but honestly I appreciate your advice here in the paly forums. I went ahead and regemmed all of my potent monarch topaz for luminous monarch topaz. About 7 gems in total. The difference was noticable. 58 more intellect when I was done. Which after kings translated into over 900 more mana. It also increased my spell power noticiablly. I lost a bit of crit, but the extra mana made up for it.

I am still utterly amazed at how many raiding healadins are still stacking Mp5. What are you guys thinking?! Have you any idea how your class works now? Maybe I'm different. I've been stacking crit and intellect since BC (mainly because i was stuck with PvP gear that had a crud of crit on it).

I have 21,194 mana with kings (kings>wisdom). Divine plea gives you 25% of your total mana ever 60 seconds (if you chain cast it, which is a bit more difficult now, but doable). This is about 5300 mana once a minute. Now to translate that into Mp5 divide 1 minute (60 seconds) by 5 seconds. 12. Now divide the mana returned every minute by 12 (in doing this you're translating the mana you gained every minute into how much you overall get every 5 seconds, ie Mp5).

~441mp5

now include mp5 from gear

58

~500mp5

Not to mention the mana regained via crit heals. Of course since I stacked intellect rather than mp5 my spell crit is substantially higher. Thus I crit more. Which gives me even more mana back.

Now throw in raid buffs like Arcane Intellect, Gift of the Wild, and the Felhunter Intellect buff. All of these increased by kings and adding ontop of your already high intellect. They not only increase your mana, but increase the amount of mana you get for divine plea. The more intellect you have. The more divine plea and intellect buffs will do for you.

I dont understand and honestly don't care why other holy pallies are stacking mp5.

What i want to know is why BLIZZ is giving pallies mp5 on all the plate gear in Ulduar, forcing us to share with Shammies for crit/haste?

The MP5/Haste, stam-heavy gear in Ulduar is supposedly designed to tone back the Int/Crit stacking pallies have been doing. All it really does is makes us steal mail and even cloth for our real BiS set.

I've won two Ulduar pieces now. The T8 shoulders, and the Divine Storm libram that I'll never be able to use because my guild doesn't let me not heal.

The mp5 itemization is just the first part of the plan.
The second part is nerfing Replenishment - they've already hinted at this.
The third part is nerfing Illumination.

At that point, mp5 will be just as viable as the other regen stats.

Even with that three part plan, Int>mp5 b/c of divine plea.

Need an opinion here. My armory is down below on my sig.

I am currently wearing Chestplate of the Great Aspects.. (don't know how to do the links)
got Brestplate of the Afterlife in my bags.

The Chestplate has crit as opposed to the Breastplates mp5 but the Int on the Breastplate is pure fatness.

Is the increase in Int worth the loss of the crit and haste?

Give you some stats here. With the chestplate I have:

21.9k mana pool
38.72% crit
2100 SP
524 Haste

With the Breastplate I have:

22.1k mana
38.40% Crit
2087 SP
500 haste

Pretty much the same I guess....

If someone could make those link for me that'd be great :P

Without even being holy, I'm pretty sure that

+.32% crit,
+24 Haste
and +13 SP @ <= 2100 SP

beats out 200 mana and worthless mp5.

At least in my opinion.

It's a tough call, Cap. By itemization value, the +int is clearly ahead, but a lot depends on where they're at in progression. A lot of people in Ulduar are at a point where they just aren't running out of mana until hard modes. So throughput is more valuable to them, at least for now. When they have to chain-cast more and/or more intensively, the regen will become important again.

My suggestion would be to buy a bigger bag and work on a throughput set and a regen set. Use the throughput set for easy fights, old-school heroics and Naxx, and healing the OT. Use the regen for progression and hard modes.

Did Thorim hardmode, Heroic, last night.

You are going to be screaming for mana at the end of that fight, screaming. It will only get worse from there Though as others mention on easy mode (especially now with 4 weeks of successive nerfs) T7.5 will be more than enough to have no mana regen problems.

What would be really cool would be if ZAM were to completely overhaul the allakhazam site over the period of a few months so that virtually everything, like a "Holy Paladin Guide" for example, were a wiki page instead of a static article, so that bright people could go into the page and edit it to add pertinent information as needed. Maybe allakhzam could then spend a month giving away gamecards and Wii's to celebrate the conversion and raise our awareness of the possibilities.
