I truly hate Razuvious...

Tonight (this morning actually) I had my first real attempt at tanking Raz (MC'ing adds).

Three priest in the party and I'm the only shadow priest. I ask (in vain hope) has anyone done this before?

priest 1:"nope, and I never will."

priest 2:"Well, I've tanked it on 10 with the crystals"

So it came down to me and the priest who had at least used the crystals to tank.

Me: Who should start, me or you?

Other priest: You.

...lovely.

I've read about (and I let the group know that's ALL I've got for experience for this), I know what should be done and how it should be done (watched people do it on 10).

So we start the first time. Wait for Raz to be at the back and Mind sooth and MC mine (while saying what I'm doing on vent) Go to pick up Raz and loose MC. Quickly pick it up and grab Raz and start this shindig. Things go ok for a bit, but somewhere along the line the other priest dies. Eventually, we wipe, though I did manage to go through the understudies pretty quickly.

Attempt 2, goes alot like the first, but I realize what I'm doing wrong at the beginning.

I'm moving that blasted *** out of MC range >.<

Inform the group, let them know and we go for attempt 3.

We start off, I manage not to lose MC right away, and we call out back and forth rather well. Inventively, around the MC 'breaks' things get a little hectic and Raz gets loose, but we pick him up quickly, move him back, and keep on going. This get really chaotic at the end (add tank dies) but we down raz and have 2 understudies left. Help the kill each other, finish them off and wrap up the fight.

Lots of bodies, but at least Raz is dead!

And the scary part is I actually think I might get good at this with practice...

Oh, and this is a PuG... Of the super-awesome variety...

But I still hate Raz and I will still dread this fight.

Raz sucks. If priests were meant to tank, we'd be wearing plate and swinging around swords the size of New Hampshire.

The range is a HUGE limiting factor for MC on that fight, but once you get the hang of it, it really isn't too bad.

At least your Mind Control button didn't stop working (along with some other spells) mid-fight. That was weird.

Been there, done that. I had the MC buff on me but I was simply controlling my own character as normal. I think that was just before he died on our attempt though, luckily.

I've only done it once, and it was messy, to say the least. I ran out of range and lost the MC. After I reset the MC, I bone shielded and taunted... taunt did not work! By this time, the other priest is getting a tad nervous, "Taunt... taunt him now... hit 5 to taunt... taunt, please?"

I had read up on how to do this and thought that I had a firm grasp of what to do, but I missed one important factor- you have to be in melee range to taunt!

After my genuine /facepalm after the fight, I reminded everyone that my goal is to avoid melee range with just about everything. I had to overcome my natural tendency to steer clear of the big pile o'peeps! (We all had a good laugh at my expense.)

I don't know if it is related, but I've had some weird things happen with my buttons after dual speccing. I was pleasantly surprised that it would save my buttons from one spec, but every so often I find that the buttons from the wrong spec are on my cast bar. I use a bar mod (Bartender4), so it may be the addon itself. It usually happens after I get a possess-type bar.

I wasn't using a mod at the time, but I simply wrote it off as this: one of the many Dual Spec bugs that were everywhere just after 3.1 when we did the raid.

Last night, however, we did a Naxx run and I managed to talk the Raid Leader into letting one of the other priests MC instead of me, citing that every time I had done it, it had ended with some portion of the raid dead.

Did this fight again tonight, only this time there was another priest who had doe in and knew what they were doing.

4 priests in the raid, so at the start of Military I say flat out (because I'm a PuG in a mostly 1 guild raid) that I've only done it once but I have a healing spec and gear if they want me to switch with one of the healing priests if they were better at it. Didn't hear much, but I assume that there HAS to be a person better suited that me.

We get to raz and thee RL asks all the priests to tell him how many times they've done this before.

Turns out I was the second most qualified person there >.<.

At least this time I was being told what to do and, while I was still not great at it, nobody in the raid died and it went rather smooth with only a couple hiccups on my part (having trouble re-targeting my MC drone).

Of course, this raid had DPS that put me to shame. I could pull out over 3k DPS with raid buffs and I had to try my hardest to contend for top 10, and I didn't make it all the time.

At least I can say I'm getting better...

Last time I add a Raz story, honest.

Well, after my last run in Naxx (a PuG), I defiantly feel good about doing this from now on. I was paired up with someone who wasn't comfortable doing the MC AND my vent apparently was too quiet for people to hear me, so with only raid chat ( quick 'taunt', 'drop', etc) we managed to down Raz with little trouble (with me in calling the shots in MC for that fight, in raid chat) with little disruption and no deaths. Group didn't even have 'super-ultra-uber DPS' like my last one did.

It felt good, real good, to feel like I had a good handle on the fight I dreaded.

For those who care, the strategy that worked was this:

Both MC Adds to start.

Main Bone shields, picks up Raz first (without going out of MC range)

Off Bone shields when Main's is about to fall, picks up Raz. Main drops MC on Add.

Main Re-MC's add, picks up Raz. Off drops MC on Add.

Rinse, repeat, only switching adds on occasion (low health namely).
