Really. Is this something for PvP only, and why shouldn't I spec for Sta instead?
I really want to see a Str/Spell Pen gem now...
I see it on many arena DK's, and I had no idea.
I'm guessing that it's because some of our attacks are spell hit based, not melee based. But ... I just never thought of spell pen as a DK stat.
Mostly I see DK's gemming spell pen for the 2 blue socket bonus of the Chaotic Skyflare Diamond, but is that all there is to it?

I have never heard of any DK worth his salt gemming for spell penetration.

For most aspects, yes. Every point of str gives two points of attack power. We get more benefits from str with a paladins blessing of kings than if we gemmed attack power. If you go unholy, your ghoul will get more benefit from the overall strength gained from gems vice attack power. Lastly, it also increases our chance to parry.

It would take quite a bit to convince most folks to take up Spell Pen over Str. To fulfill the blue socket requirements one would usually use this.
Also note that Penetration has little to do with Hit iirc. Its basic mechanic is to overcome resistance, or "penetrate through" resistance. My lock (my more pvp oriented toon) used it a bit in arena to overcome MotW.
serenias DK, nathyrra (sp?) gems for spell pen. or he did in S5. regardless of what you think of him as a person, his points were valid; getting resists on mind freeze and strangulate at the wrong time can spell the difference between a win and a loss. seeing as 3/4 of the healers have something to protect against at least one of those spells (frost resist totem, frost or shadow aura, shadow protection) and the last has a general +resist all buff, ensuring that your stuff always lands is tantamount. i personally put it at about the same importance as capping +hit in pvp; missing those key interrupts is just game-breaking.
plus if youre frost or unholy anyone with resistances to your attacks is going to chop off a good 10-20% of your elemental damage each hit. critting scourge strike for 4k on a resilience-heavy priest is nice until you realize you lost another 1200 damage in resists.
hence, my goal is to snag 130ish spell pen and call it a day as far as gemming for it goes.

This kid is smart he knows his **** and is absolutely no scrub when it comes to pvp. He gems spell pen because he understands that scourge strike is shadow damage and shadow damage needs spell pen to get past the resist.
His rating is misleading because he's probabaly trying to get one of our guildies, a disc priest his rating up and not running with his prime healer a resto druid.
