I'm just about to hit 58 and head into Outlands and I'm a little worried about finding healers to get groups together for Ramparts, etc.
I've got some mail items in the bank with +intellect and +mp5 stats on them, I'm just sorta wondering if I would be able to heal a 5man group through some of the early Outlands instances, ie. ret-specced but wearing caster-oriented gear....I'm too poor at the moment to buy dual-spec.

I healed Blood Furnace at 62, ret specced in ret gear with 4 Death Knights. There was a few wipes, but it is definitely doable.
Very 'do-able' if you have the right group.
Ramps with 2 mages or strong CC wouldn't be too bad. A ret Paly or a paly tank would help. Shadow priest would be helpful. DK heavy team would help...
It's something you could do, but would make it harder. I can't imagine it's efficient. I also can't see it working in the Coil Fang instanes or higher with any real rate of success.

It can work through most of outlands with decent gear. But this is heavily determined by the player. If you're familiar healing as a paladin then you can get away with it. If you're not, however, I imagine you'll struggle.

I healed Ramparts many times as PROT in all cloth gear.
I've actually healed as Ret, but I've had healing experience from FFXI (much different btw) but still it was enough to get me by. I actually thought I sucked at healing and to my surprise it felt so natural I didn't realize it. Still it is a gear thing, you'll have high crits with your heals, but you won't get any mana back as if you were holy and keep conc. aura up it will help.
I have had healer DC's during heroics and my pally friend Coteaz has healed the rest of the instance without changing gear.
Update for anyone else's interest: I healed ramps and BF just fine with Hellfire-level +int/+mp5 plate and a nice shield...
