Fire mage dps issuesFollow

#1 May 04 2009 at 7:42 AM Rating: Decent
I'm new to posting :)

I have a 80 mage fire build, 0/53/18
Character and his current gear:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dark+Iron&n=Qulic [/pre] here is his talents & Glyphs:
http://www.wowarmory.com/talent-calc.xml?cid=8&tal=00000000000000000000000000000023050300123033310531203013512033030310030000000000000000
(don't know how to hyper link sorry you will have to copy and paste)

I love the fire tree and will be staying in fire, and i've started a rotation:
Scorch x5, Living Bomb, FireBlast, Frostfire x 2, instant pyroblast.... repeat
i don't know if this can be improved or not. but my dps seems too low.

I use the add on recount, and when i'm attacking the boss dummy in org during attacks it peaks to 2300-2400, but as soon as the attacks are over, it levls out and says i'm doing 1300 dps??? is there a better dps meter? or what am i missing?? i use recount to review my individual attacks and i can see that my crits are 66%

I hear mixed things about what is prority to a caster hit/sp/crit/int... what is the priority??? Could my dps be so low because my hit rating is low, only hitting a percentage of the time, opposed to all the time?

should i have my hit rating capped or should i focus on my crit? or hit first, then crit?

I need help and open for suggestions, please keep in mind i don't want to change my talent tree.

I appreciate the help.

I recommend read the sticky at the top of the page, it covers/links to most of the information that you want.

Your rotation is wrong.

You glyphed for imp scorch (would change it to living bomb for a huge dps increase...) but with that glyph you only need to scorch ONCE.

Fireblast is not part of our rotation unless are are moving (and are not re-casting living bomb or an instant pyroblast) or finishing off a mob.

Standard FFB rotation:

Living Bomb
Scorch (if you have to)
Frostfire bolt spam until:
Re-apply LB or Use instant Pyro if available.

Repeat

Your gem choices are terrible, especially being a 448 jewelcrafter. You don't have a single dragons eye (you can have 3). Both of your trinkets are pretty bad. By now you should be able to buy the stopwatch at least.

If your gear is epic it deserves rare gems, period. Mages don't stack Mp5, ever. So get rid of that terrible blue gem in your belt. And your meta gem should be a chaotic skyflare, always. Boots need to be enchanted, icewalker is pretty much standard. Your back isn't enchanted, your shoulders aren't enchanted, helm isn't enchanted.

Defenitely some great advice, funding becomes a part of the issue when it comes to enchants. but i will start to work on those. As far as Jewelcrafting, it was a grind, and i don't have many recipes other than what is off the j/c trainer. But still my question is, should i be focusing on crit, hit, sp??

so rotation is wrong... i can fix that
gems are wrong... i can fix that
enchants are missing... i can fix that
what about hit, crit, sp etc???

Appreciate the feedback

For Frostfire (your current spec) it goes:

Spellpower > Crit > Haste > Hit

Hit is important, but shouldn't really be gemmed for, you should get it through talents/raid buffs/gear.

Excellent, that seems to be my understanding. I also read through some of the post you have out there. Right Before the latest patch i had my talents all wrong and no specific rotation. I spoke to a raiding Mage doing emalon and he made some suggestions that got me to where i am now, including that rotation i had. But after reading some of your post i noticed something i wanted to be clear on.

Scorch, your having me use on occasion. If i have too (when would that be? I thought it was a need to basis)

as i understand if i crit on my scorch it's like stealing a crit from my FFB?
thats why we don't use it very much (trying to sum it up what i read... that is)

And you mention a stop watch? (. By now you should be able to buy the stopwatch at least) which one is that?

The head enchant and shoulder enchants, i don't even know what i should enchant them with, thats why they aren't.
as far as the gem selection, goes back to not knowing what i should slot with.

Suggestions? as my direction seems a bit....wrong....

Alrighty, so Scorch we now use when there are no warlocks in the raid that will put up the shadow mastery (i believe is their debuff) that puts the 5% crit (note that it was decreased to 5% since 3.1 from 10%) in one spellcast (one shadowbolt). Fire warlocks (destruction) will not use shadowbolts -- demonology (not felguard I believe) and affliction will be (or should be) putting up the crit debuff, meaning we will not need to cast scorch. If they are not present then we will need to do so. You may want to see if there are any other mages with the scorch glyph (should you re-glyph to glyph of living bomb -- which is a huge dps increase and is still worth it over needing to cast scorch 5x if you have to). I hope that makes sense.

They 'fixed' ignite munching a bit, but overall with the glyph of living bomb (living bomb ticks can crit) and everything else randomly critting they wind up being about equal so it isn't worth worrying about for the time being (which is why you can cast a pyroblast immediately after a FFB or a Fireball if you were arcane/fire spec) and just let it go, ignoring ignite munching.

The trinket I was referring to was the Sundial of the Exiled, sorry, not Stopwatch.

The head enchant you should get would be the Kiron Tor revered one. And the shoulder enchants come from doing the Sons of Hodir dailies (at honored and then better ones at exalted). You will (and always will want) the spellpower/crit ones.
