Okay, so I use Stormstrike, Earth Shock, Lava Lash and Lightning Bolt whenever I get Maelstrom Weapon up to 5 stacks. Problem is, this leaves me with a fair bit of time where I am just auto-attacking and doing nothing else while I wait for Stormstrike to come off cooldown again.
How do I resist the urge to fill up that gap with a Lightning Bolt?
(I blame my Hunter and my Steady Shot addiction.)

Using a lightning bolt resets your swing timer. This takes away maelstrom weapon, unleashed rage, lightning shield (talented), and flurry procs. Also the potential pushback from AOE could cause you to be late on using one of your other spells/attacks. There should not be too much time where everything is on cd and maelstrom weapon isn't at 5 charges. Even if you do find this down time, use it to refresh a magma totem or lightning/water shield, pop a trinket or racial. There are plenty of things you can do that take up those extra GCD's which still allow for plenty of pretty white numbers.
