Blood or Unholy tankingFollow

#1 Apr 29 2009 at 11:26 AM Rating: Decent
Not being a tank, I apologize for the noob question.

Which presence do you have on while tanking? I have always assumed Frost presence, since that seems to be built for tanking, but do all tanks use it or just frost speced tanks?

Thank you.

frost presence for tanking. other presences provide a threat reduction, which is obviously undesirable, while frost offers increased threat. Plus the whole armor and HP thing.

Blood and Unholy Presence only reduce threat with three points spent in Subversion. I guess most PvE Death Knights have it, though.

Do they provide one without taking the talent for it? I just thought Frost had the 2.01 modifier.

There are a few times where you may switch out of Frost, but it is by far the most used presence. There are just occasions where the increased DpS is superior in high burst situations where the incoming damage is magical or low.

But, even then, you should only switch out if you are really comfortable with your DK.

[EDIT]

DAMMIT MAZ!

Just one last note.

BASICALLY:

Blood = PvE DpS
Frost = PvE tanking
Unholy = PvP

There will always be situations within those environments where another presence may be superior. Like in PvE burst situations, or when you might just need to last another few seconds in PvP for a heal, etc.

Why is Unholy Presence so good for PvP?

I always figured +15% damage was far superior to 15% haste and lower global cooldowns.

This is just what I have heard from DKs that specialize in PvP.

I figure it is because PvP is ruled by burst damage. 15% is nice, but the object is to take a target down 20-30K of Health as fast as possible. Generally, I think this is easier by fitting in more, lower damage abilities.

And, when you can hit for 3-5K each, an additional 450-700 damage per hit isn't as good as fitting another ability in every 3 seconds.

But, because of the rune cooldowns, this only matters in PvE during specific burst scenarios.

Also, because the RP return doesn't change. So, you can get your Garg or DRW up much faster.

[EDIT]

I get the feeling people don't even care about the 15% weapon speed when comparing them. Though getting in another auto-attack isn't bad.

Damn. Button mashing galore.

I think it's insane just as it is. Did help a lot when I kicked Rune Strike into a macro instead of mashing a button every time it lit up.
