Non-raider DPS questionFollow

#1 Apr 28 2009 at 6:45 AM Rating: Decent
Hello,

I've been reading all the post about DPS and it all seems to go towards raiding. I don't raid, I will do a BG every once in a while or world pvp if I get jumped. Other than that, I quest and play with my friends. We will do a 5 man, but usually no more than that.

So that being said, I have tried all 3 specs and I like them all, would like to DW, but hear its not that good, but is that just for raiding? Was going to go unholy/frost DW, just wondering if thats a good spec that I can hold my own solo or in a 3-5 man group.

Thank you

I am relatively new to the DK but from what Ive learned DW is an all around inferior spec for tanking and for dps. Most of our abilities are a % of our weapon damage which means you want a beefy two hander to maximize you abilities damage. Plus, imo, a big two hander looks better than DW two puny weapons. We are Death Knights not Rogues =0.

Maybe others will chime in with an opposite opinion but from what Ive learned DW is inferior to using a Two Hander. Hope Ive helped.

If you're not raiding you can do whatever you want, especially if you group with friends, as they'll be more understanding. Yes, you'll do less damage, but if your gear is ok and you use your cooldowns wisely you'll be fine in most heroics. They really aren't all that bad. Would you do better damage with a two-hander? Yes, of course. But if your friends are cool with it you could even do a tri-spec if you really wanted.

What they said, with some details:

The old DW spec used to do good damage by maximizing the effects of auto-attacks while focusing on attacks that have AP modifiers, not weapon ones. So, you would have KM, BCB and Necrosis.

But, with changes to those abilities and those to Rime, plus the moving of HB and Garg to the end of the tree, DW lost a lot of its oomph and 2-handers got a lot more power.

The nerfs to sigils didn't help.

And, the highest DpS spec pre-3.1 was already a 2-handed spec (Blood).

But, like everyone else said, do what you want if you run only with friends and aren't worried about maximizing your DpS. If you like DW, go DW.

Just be sure to let any non-friends in your groups (like if one of you aren't available one night) that you all run off-specs, so that things may not be as fun. Most people in the 5-10 man level will still go, and some may enjoy being able to freestyle as well. But, many will still get really angry if they feel like you are just wasting their time.

Those people probably won't go, but everyone will have more fun if you are open from the beginning and find someone else instead.

What they said. It's really not a big deal if you're jammin' around with some friends for 5-toon instances. Just have fun with whatever build you like and don't sweat it. Be sure to get a basic understanding of the class mechanics and stat priorities (crib notes version: Expertise > Hit > Str > Else) if only to make loot easier.

But, (there's always a "but" isn't there?) if you DO end up in a pug raid or something "just to check it out" you should have an optimized spec and possibly a gear set in the bank. It's considered a bit rude to show up to a raid, even lolNaxx, with a sub-par set up and waste the other 9 or 24 peoples' time. Even just a good 2-hander set aside (grab the one from the Zul'Drak arena event or the Titansteel mace if you can afford it) and spec ready to go, just in case. You never know, you might like it =)

Cheers.
