I need DPS advice...Follow

#1 Apr 27 2009 at 2:40 AM Rating: Decent
I'm an 80 Mage, I've done 55 Emblems of Heroism worth of Heroics(262SKS, 36 Badges of Justice from regs) running instances every day and night that I can.
I just did my first Sarth 1D 25man, which was awesome.

I've been kinda unlucky on drops(I have only Epic bracers, from H VH) no epics from HoL or the like.

I have both Frost and Arcane specs. As Frost for boss I pop Elem, Mirror Image then hit Icy Veins, my trinket, and spam Frostbolt until Veins wears, hit Cold Snap, re Icy Veins and pop Elem again when he vanishes.
My DPS blows.

As Arcane I prep Presence of Mind then toss out Mirror Image, Slow, then hit trinket and Icy Veins followed with Arcane Blast, hit Arcane Power and spam Arcane Blast 2 more times, then Barrage(or Missiles if buff is up). I then sit back on Blast x3 -> Barrage or Missiles(if buff) and reapply Slow as it fades.

My Armory is here and I'm working on it but I should be doing 2.5k+ and I don't do 2k on anything but trash...

Are you sure you´re supposed to be dping 2.5k plus with your gear? Your spellpower isnt great, the crit and haste too low, and hit also.
There are several crafted items which you can get (rings, weapon, helm, pants, not to mention gloves and robe) and BoE shoulders from AH that could really improve your gear.

Wow really? Most of the things were boss drops in Heroics so I figured they would be upper end for Rares.

And people told me the numbers, I am unsure of what all I need. I do know that my Hit isn't seemingly an issue. I never have acc issues in regular Heroics and 25 Sarth was no problem.

Helm: Hat of Wintry Doom or the better version bought with 40 Wintergrasp Mark of Honour
Neck: 2 BoE drops from OS/Naxx, or crafted one that matches the ring (Titanium set)
Shoulders: BoE drop Dark Runic Mantle
Back: Deathchill epic crafted cloak
Chest: lots of options: crafted blue robes with crit or haste, crit robes from heroics (about 2 or 3), hit robes from heroic VH, crafted epic robes with haste or hit, all better than your robe.
Bracers are great.
Weapon is nice, if you have the time/money there's a better one, crafted epic dagger introduced with last patch, Titansteel Spellblade, or the caster weapon(s?) from the Argent Tournament rewards.
Off hand: if you purchase the trinket when you reach 40 EoH, get the offhand next.
Wand: epic one from heroic AzjN
Gloves: great epic gloves from last boss in Nexus heroic
Waist: epic one from AzjN, hit one from heroic Up, blue crit one from heroic GD, if youre unlucky with drops get the Plush Sash as your third EoH purchase
Legs: crafted blue ones with haste, or crit blue ones from heroic UP might be easier to get than the ones in HoL
Feet: nice ones, better from Wyrmest accord exalted, or blue haste ones in heroic Nexus
Rings: Titanium crafted one, haste epic ones in UK and CoS heroic, or nice blue crafted one Ring of Northern tears
Trinkets: get the Sundial one once you reach 40 EoH, as a second one, the hit one from heroic VH would be nice, or haste one from heroic Occ, or crit one from HoS

You should not need to be using slow on bosses, your tank should be putting up the attack speed snare equivalent that counts as a slowing effect.

Toss out mirror image at the beginning is fine (now that it causes a complete GCD). My recommendation for a boss fight:

MI
AB
AB
POM AB
Arcane Power + Trinket + Icy Veins
AB Spam until you get a missile barrage proc (I use power auras to tell me), use missile barrage, and go back to AB spam.

When your cooldowns where off, pop evocation, get to full (or close to it). Then go to a more conservative rotation (ABx3, Abar/Mbar) or ABx2, Abar/Mbar are two that would work well).

Frost sucks for boss dps compared to fire/arcane in most situations.

Also you're missing a few enchants that would help up your SP too. There's a +30 SP enchant for bracers which would be an upgrade of what you currently have, and there's also a SP enchant for hands as well. See if you can find a tailor friend to make you a leg enchant. I would avoid buying one off the AH simply because a lot of tailors (at least on my server) put them up way overpriced. Your haste and your hit are both abysmally low, no offense. I would get the haste enchant on your cloak, and the +6 to all stats on chest. You also need to go start working on your Sons of Hodir rep for the shoulder enchants. Go to Storm Peaks and hit the Goblin town K3, get the quest They Took Our Men! and finish that chain until you get neutral with SoH, then start doing dailies until you're at least Honored with them for the first shoulder enchant, and then work towards exalted for the second one.

Thanks! As said, didn't think hit was important so I will now look for it :) My Ret side still pulls me to jump on crit lol. I'll work on more haste/hit :D
Also Hodir.. ugh. But I guess I should work on them and Tourney now.

If you are the least bit interested in pvp there are a handful of epics you can buy now with honor that would be upgrades. Decent rings, neck, cloak, belt that can all be bought with honor. Most of it is low INT (at least for an epic might still be an upgrade to a blue) but it has decent crit and spellpower. Also some pieces (neck, ring, cloak) have hit rating and spellpower. I think all of the Wintergrasp purchased epic armor has hit rating for mages as well.

Also you can use stonekeeper shards to buy a spellpower armor kit for your cloak in Wintergrasp for either 30 or 40 shards. I never did mess with Sons of Hodir since every time I go there it seems like I have to fight with a ton of people for spawns. I am sure its better then the pvp one but 30 to 40 stone keeper shards is alot easier to farm.

Those all all options you can consider as well. Wintergrasp Win or Lose is an excellent source of honor, shards, and money if you do the daily's in there.

I’m a relatively fresh 80 with only a few epic and a lot of blue/green gear still. I’ve been using this:

Fight starts:
Mirror
Trinket 1 (The better one)
AP
AB
AB
AB
*Continue AB till Proc or till Trinket runs out

Trinket 2
A.Barrage
Fireblast
PoM
AB
AB
AB
*Continue AB till Proc or till Trinket runs out

The basic idea is to quickly front load Arcane Blasts to get the power up fast. So – I pop Mirror, then my best trinket, then (Cause I’m using my better trinket) AP. After this I spam AB till I get a proc. After a proc I wash the AB 3-stack off.

Then my goal is to quickly get back in the game. I pop trinket 2, Instant cast Barrage, Fireblast, then – To hasten my stacking of AB – PoM – then AB spam until a proc.

For trash: I currently open with Flamestrike 9, followed by flamestrike 8, followed by 1 blizzard cycle – then reapply Flamestrike 9. At this point it’s usually best to switch to a single target.

*Edit - I'd like to get confirmation on the trash. I *THINK* that it's the best move to go Flame9, Flame8, Blizz because the 9/8 Flames stack on the DoT, but I can't figure out if it's best to start the Blizz... Maybe someone wiser (anob or Pol) could inform me.

See - The 9/8 Flame stacks. I know this and see it happening. But - would the original 9 Basically have it's DoT fall of by the time I cast a Second 9.

Meaning -
FS9 - few sec cast, Big spike damage, then Dot,dot,dot...
FS8 - Fes sec cast, Big spike damage, then Dot,dot,dot...

Does it benifit me more to start Bliz (Channel Spell) so damage starts (Essentially) at Cast time zero - no need to wait the few seconds to cast ----

OR

Does it benifit me to go back to a FS9 to reapply the Spike Damage/DOT... So FS9, FS8, FS9 - then Single target???

Basically - that would mean - Is it more efficient (Better DPS per mana invested) to cast FS9, then FS8, then wait for the FS9 (again) to land - or after the 2 stacks should I just Blizz like hell because the Bliz starts DPS basically right away after casting???
