I'm a Disc spec

I have, in the interest of fairness and my overall nice nature, passed on items that are an upgrade to me in terms of spellpower and stats because they also have an attribute that is of a greater importance to another class. Hit Rating, for example, does little for me. Haste, does more for me, but not as much as it does to DPS casters and even other Healers.

I have been considerate to my fellow teammates. And while that's been great for my karma, it's been terrible for my gear. For the unfortunate result of this, is that I pass-up rolling gear with SpellPower + Haste, or Spellpower + Haste + Critical Strike or Spellpower + Hit + Critical Strike to roll on gear that has just Spellpower + Critical Strike...along with everyone and their mother. Because while some classes can benefit from Hit Rating, and even more Classes can benefit from Haste, everybody benefits from Critical Strike.

After a while I'm starting to feel like my good intentions have left me scrounging on the floor for the other caster's tablescraps.

I know what your going to say. "Well, eventually, Zem" you'll remark, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder "Everyone else will get their gear, and you'll be the only person rolling". "Not so," I'll counter in a dismal fashion "for most of the gear that has both spellpower and critical strike is only available in the 25 man, and we PuG the remaining members. Whether or not you have gotten something prior determines whether or not you can win the item your rolling on, but this gets reset each night, so as to give the PuG members who won something incentive to return"

TL:DR;
I'm a Disc Priest. Can I roll on Haste and Hit Rating gear? Would you, if you were in my shoes? I recognize it isn't optimal, but due to the fact Critical Strike is the most competitive caster stat, and the 1/2 PuG nature of the folks I run with, I'm starting to believe I'll never advance my gear otherwise.

I may not be the best healer, but I do roll on things that are an upgrade.

Sure, that piece has +hit, but if the other stats are better than what I'm currently wearing? I go for it. If it'll help me heal better, then I go for (though truth be told, I've started running mostly as DPS because of flack that I've gotten from one very nasty group).

I still find haste useful for the times that I'm NOT casting PW:S, renew, or Penance. Normally, those times I have to rely on 'filler'(i.e. flash heal) and less castime is defiantly a good thing then.

Granted, I got lucky and I was the shmuck in the group with the worst on the the PuGs and got the things no one else wanted ( or got lucky and rolled high on my tier 7.5 shoulders, I love the wings!). Now I'm one of the best people in my guild (we're doing Naxx 10 tonight and have no planned Naxx 25, just to let you know who 'l33t' we all are).

I wouldn't feel terrible rolling on a peice that give +hit (unless you have people in the raid that really, really, need hit) and I certainly wouldn't bad about rolling on +haste gear (crit may be better, but haste can still help when casting filler, and casting fillers usually mean that things are happening fast.)

No good deed goes unpunished.

We should not do something out of the kindness of our hearts with expectations of that favor being returned. We should be kind for the sake of kindness. While it is nice to have the favor returned, it shouldn't be expected.

With all that sappy cliche crap out of the way, it's pretty simple, in my opinion. Any gear with Hit Rating should not go to a healer unless there are no DPS classes who can use it.

Yes, there are other stats on the piece that benefit you, but you only get benefits from the some of the stats, while caster dps gets benefits from all of the stats. It's kind of the same situation as melee dps rolling on ranged weapons against Hunters(and vice versa). A hunter gets benefit from the stats and the dps of the weapon, while melee only get benefits from the stats. Just like a ranged weapon should go to a hunter over melee, hit rating caster gear should always go to a caster DPS over you.

In the end, the only advice, which is what I have said to my guild members over and over again. Stop passing your gear to someone else. There are/should be loot rules in place that should perpetuate fair and even distribution of loot among the raid. Passing your loot to someone else who you feel is more needing of the gear basically bypasses the entire loot rules for your own personal preferences, which as you now see, leads to you being left holding the empty bag feeling distraught.

So continue raiding and stop passing your loot to someone else.

Edit: Fixed soem spelling. and wanted to add.

I am not saying to not continue being nice and passing on loot occasionally, but the key word there is occasional.

I understand and applaud your consideration for your teammates. If you have a mage friend in the party and you know they could better make use for it, by all means, pass it. This helps advance your guild as a group.

Never, EVER pass for a pugger. Roll on it and let fate decide. You're not being unfair to them by rolling on it. You're being unfair to yourself by holding to a rule that they certainly don't reciprocate.

Let me start off by saying "don't roll on +hit gear unless it's a serious upgrade for you". The thing is, what is +hit on those gloves could've been mp5 on another set of gloves. What counts for +hit gear is that assuming nobody needs the item and assuming it's actually an upgrade, it's barely ever worth it.

Haste is a bit different; I personally avoid the stat alltogether as it's really not that good for most healing priests, but if your situation is really that bad I'd say roll on a couple of haste items.

That said, I'm in exactly the same situation as you are seeing as I pass up everything that has haste or crit. In fact, my situation probably used to be worse since I also prefered gear with mp5 over gear with spirit (this changed when I off-specced holy in 3.1). However, I'm the best geared healer in our guild (and possibly the best geared player as well) and have been so since 2 or 3 weeks after I joined.

I realize things are different if you pug a lot, but it really shouldn't be that bad. There is plenty of gear with crit and spirit, mp5 or intellect around. Most of it is like you said in Naxx 25, which is why my advice would simply be "work on your guild". Slight upgrades are upgrades I guess, but you'll want to go for the real deal whenever possible.

Healers shouldnt roll on hit gear and dps shouldnt roll on mp5 gear, its that simple. Unless its indeed an upgrade and no one else needs it.
Other than that please feel free to roll on any upgrades, no matter if its from spell power, crit or haste or spirit.

As Disc I don't roll on Hit gear but I will roll on anything else with int/spellpower/haste/crit on it. I only roll on haste gear if it is a big upgrade though as I don't rate haste above crit but pure crit gear is sparse. I have dropped a few things in the past to help a guildie all in blues get geared but now I am past needing to be nice.

Hit gear is actually really hard to find in Naxx sometimes and as a caster you NEED it to get to your hit cap. Having seen the pain of a guildie who had good gear he couldn't wear for weeks as it knocked him too far below the hit cap I NEVER roll on hit gear, unless it is an upgrade AND the alternative would be for it to be sharded.

Overall I have been waiting for a long time for most of my gear. I still have a crafted caster helm (hat of wintry doom) a heroic drop cape and a rep reward wand. The rest of my gear I got within a couple of weeks of Naxx runs (although I only have 2 pieces of tier gear) these last pieces won't drop for love nor money. Sometimes loot is a ***** whatever you do. I have NEVER passed on an upgrade for any of these items and I have rarely even seen one.

I think I will continue to keep my mitts off of Hit, but Haste seems to be pretty fair game.
Although I'll probably only covet it until I get my spellpower and base stats on a more respectable footing.

Thank you for your input and reassurances folks. :3
