Gearing for HeroicsFollow

With dual spec I'm sussing out how to gear up my dps warrior for heroics. I can't link to armory during maitenance (and natch he logged in dps set anyways) but will try to log out in my ghetto tank duds at some point. I was just wondering if there's a list anywhere of gear to farm. I'm already revered w wyrmrest and have a few heroic tank drops from pugs but am maddeningly at 532 def (imagine that'll get up to 535 once I enchant and smelt my last titansteel bar to make the tank helm. But I'm far from satisfied from what I can get from rep, quests and non-heroics. My healer wouldn't want this guy tanking anything, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

In case it isn't clear, I'm looking to gear him to tank heroics, not dps them.

No doubt the OP is aware that Crit Immunity is 535 for Heroics and 540 Raids. Crafted Items with a big chunk of defense are the Titansteel Wall, Daunting Handguards and Legplates and the Armour Plated Combat Shotgun.

You'll get a nice Tanking Sword from Prince Keleseth (First Boss in Herotic(sic) Utgarde Keep, and a better one from King Ymiron (Last Boss in Herotic Utgarde Pinnacle).
Defense Trinket from Loken in Normal Halls of Lightning, and the TBC version from Blackheart the Inciter in Herotic Shadow Labs (soloable by 80 Prot Warrior).

You need a minimum of 23K Health unless your healer is Superman, Jesus and Florence Nightingale with the reflexes of a Ninja Panther. Stack your gear with +DEF and +STA gems for the time being.

I guess the OP is already a miner ( for the Stamina / Health buff) , and possibly a Blacksmith from the post: Tempered Titansteel Helm and Treads.
You should have the Cloak of Peaceful Resolutions (Honoured with Wyrmrest). Revered will also get you Breastplate of the Solemn Council.
Honoured with Argent Crusade for the Special Issue Legplates.

Look out for Waistguard of the Risen Knight and Pauldrons of the Colossus (Shoulders) on AH. There are better (more expensive) BoE drops than these from Naxx, but these will suffice.

Check your gear, and let us know which gear doesn't have any Def. No doubt someone will suggest an upgrade or post a link to a gear list. (I'm working from a hardcopy, I'll have a look for it online)

Yes, he knows that 535 is for heroics and 540 for raids... he did mention about being shy of the 535.

Tusker, now that it's Wednesday, perhaps you can link your armory now and we can get an idea on what to help you out with. Quite honestly, 535 isn't hard to get to with a couple of crafted epics and blues. It's just a matter on how you enchant and gem your gear.

Will do shortly, in-laws are over and I have limited wow access today....I'll get to 535 once I gem and enchant, no doubt (and once I get the tempered titansteel helm). But I do worry about hitting 23k health....I'll link tonight and any ideas would be appreciated. And, again, this guy's set hasnt been gemmed or enchanted and hes my only toon on server so he's poor.

Well, here we go:

www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Kul+Tiras&n=Minimelee

531, once I get the Argent Crusade enchant on my head, Tempered Titansteel helm (just mailed a friend mats for it) and get a def enchant I should be above 535. But in the health dept....thread on the pants and the crusade enchant will help somewhat, but even w +sta to feet, hands and wrists not sure I can make it to 23k. I'll farm HoL for that trinket. Any other ideas appreciated.

I put together a list of "easy" upgrades to get - included a badge neck because you've obviously been running heroics, and a set of leggings from heroic VH, because it's just not that hard. I listed in parenthesis how much stamina you'd be gaining over your current set.

Head - Tempered Titansteel Helm (+71 stamina +24 gem = +95 stamina)
Ranged - Armor Plated Combat Shotgun (+21 stamina, +24 gem = +45 stamina)
Neck - Chained Military Gorget (+24 Stamina)
Waist - Waistguard of the Risen Knight (+29 Stamina, +24 Stamina gem = +53 Stamina) [Waistguard of Living Iron if you have badges]
Legs - Bolstered Legplates (Heroic VH) (+30 stamina, +24 gem = +54 stamina)

Frosthide Leg Armor - +55 Stamina
Foot enchant - +22 stamina

Total +Stamina: 348

Don't forget your +6% stamina boost from Prot, and you're sitting at around 24k, more than enough for heroics. Once you start running heroics, Heroic AN has a nice +111 stamina trinket that drops from the 2nd boss, and there are other upgrades around too.

Good luck, and enjoy yourself!

Thanks; I don't have the cash for the shotgun but do have a +40 sta bow with no parry or d sitting in bank (wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=35590;source=live). The leggings do not drop in my HVH runs but I suppose I'll muddle through. My understanding is that once I reach mid-20s health and the magical def #s that I should be looking at things like +parry, +dodge and +block as top stat, that correct, then +sta, +str and +def?

Depends on how much you want it. As a miner though, you can defray some of the cost by mining up the titanium and saronite yourself. Eternals you could farm, just leaving a walnut stock, a frozen orb, and a willing Engineer to craft it.

As far as priorities, block is less valuable against harder hitting bosses, but extremely strong in heroics (especially against trash). Dodge/parry/defense all add to actual avoidance. And in terms of soaking damage (effective health / time to live), it's all about stamina and armor. For where you're at now though, you'll have a pretty clear path of straight upgrades until you get raiding.

Is there a point of diminishing returns to +def when specific +parry or +dodge becomes more important? I'm used to gearing up a raiding bear tank and there is a point at which you switch from getting your obscene health pool up to getting your dodge rating to a commensurately obscene level. Wondering if there is such a pivot from a warrior tank.

And perhaps a final question -- recommended glyphs?

Major
Glyph of Blocking
Glyph of Heroic Strike
Glyph of Devastate / Revenge / Sunder Armor

Minor
Glyph of Thunder Clap
Glyph of Bloodrage
Glyph of Battle

IMO, Glyph of Blocking / Heroic Strike / Thunder Clap are just way too good to pass up. The other ones are debatable.

Glyph of Sunder is nice for getting sunders built up on off targets for trash pulls, but not too great on most bosses. Glyph of Devastate is nice for getting a full stack of sunders up ASAP. Glyph of Revenge has a nice synergy with Glyph of Heroic Strike. Depending on content, you might be able to make a case for Glyph of Shield Wall.

Minor glyphs, other than Thunder Clap, are mostly a convenience thing, tbh.

Thanks very much Tab, you've been a great help. And, needless to say, rate up.

Glyph of charge is quite nice as well, the ability to charge in combat combined with a lower CD can and will save lives :)
