Figuring out bear gearFollow

#1 Apr 20 2009 at 8:27 PM Rating: Good
With 3.1 I'm trying to figure out how I should regear, and reinstalled Rawr as a resource. Things seem to have changed with Savage Defense (Especially Polar), but since it's a ***** to model, I'm curious if anyone knows whether Rawr is modeling it in a reasonable way, or overvaluing dps stats?

Rawr has been odd with this latest version. It's been telling me things are upgrades that I know aren't (as in I just upgraded it, I log in-game, and it's trying to tell me that a difference of 1 SP is worth drastic changes elsewhere).

Then again I'm a tree.

Odds are that overall it's modeling it in a reasonable way. Regardless of that, always double check that things make sense.

That's why I'm hoping someone else has done the legwork already, since I last focused heavily in figuring things out stamina and armor lost effect, and dps stats gained some, so I don't have an internal gauge of how things SHOULD compare anymore. I stopped using Rawr when I got used enough to things to eyeball it.

RAWR has a tendency to over value health.

Which does in general have the largest impact on TTL.

I haven't done a RAWR model since the patch but I could see it over valuing SD as well.

RAWR is awesome but you have to know how to evaluate RAWR.

Avoidance is usually better but you need a certain HP and mitigation level first. RAWR is all about the HP and mitigation.

Polar gear is... broken. It has huge armor and HP but nothing else so RAWR loves it. As those stats do have a large impact on TTL. SD also will have a big TTL impact as it is straight damage reduction, which RAWR loves.

Also make your own gem and enchant modeling, it helps greatly.

I'm not all that interested in tanking, and I don't need to be perfectly geared for it, but here's what I intend to do.

DE all my tanking specific gear, with the exception of the Essence of Gossamer.

At this point, my dps gear, being heavily focused on agi and crit, gives me much better avoidance and absorbs anyway. I will be low on hp though, so I intend to get my frost resist out of the bank, resocket/enchant for stam exclusively and swap a number of them in my tanking gear to add loads of HP, depending on the situational needs.

Of course my tanking gear wasn't stellar to begin with, I'm raiding mainly as resto. I see a chance to reduce the clutter in my bags though, and I think I'll take it ;)

I was thinking of making a change in my Tank set. I can't get the number as I logged out in my DPS gear last night, but I think I was sitting around 32k hp and armor and 30% dodge. I also have about 220 hit. I'm thinking of losing some of the hit to increase my health. What is a ressonable amount of Hit to generate treat?

Right now I do fine as long as the DPS gives me a little time to build it up. Nothing aggrevates me more then the DPS attacking before I can even hit the boss. I'll pull with Growl and they start going to town. I just want to scream and call them idiots.

Your health (32K) seems fine, but your dodge seems way low to me.. 30%? I would do your healers a break, get agility gems in and think of some different gear, and push your dodge closer to 40%.

I'm not sure what ideal hit is on a bear... i struggle with this on my gear. Cat hit is in the 230+ range, but bear is only 120 or so. Then again, I've had zero threat issues since 3.1, if anything it seems better, so who knows?

The thing is, On Rawr Polar gear has gone from first to... about 20-30th. That big a change makes me wonder if it's counting appropriate SD uptime.

It is devaluing Polar due to the new gear. New gear has higher iLevel and armor by extension.

Plus SD modeling and general avoidance on new gear trumps the stam on Polar.

edit: LOVE the new gem interface.

I checked my gear tonight. In my tank gear I have 30k HP, 30K Armor and 39% Dodge. This is with just Mark of the Wild buff. I thought the 30% was a little low.

Is polar gear still a good option for tanking then? I guess I have never considered that gear, I have been trying to find Agi/Stam leathers.... ><

I think polar gear was always overrated and only useful for frost resistance fights, or if you just didn't have an epic in that slot yet.

Yes, but there is better.

Just use agility based gems.

Profit.

Polar gear used to be quite good when we got major effect from stamina and armor. Going by Rawr I swapped out the chest and boots (belt is best I have on-hand) and lost about 3.5K hp, but I've found with dodge and SD I live more easily in Ulduar. On top of that my threat's better, I gained 50 damage on swipe (sounds big, but I double-checked).

It's still good gear if you're trying to get enough HP to survive (but as was mentioned for the love of God gem for dodge), better just exists now, and easily.

Can you explain this? I am stuck in BC mode, looking for STR, ARM, and STAM with some dodge thrown in.

Bears never geared for Str even in BC.

Just gear like normal.

Armor, agility, stamina and dodge. Stir in crit and AP. With a touch of expertise, hit and a skoosh of haste.

It was pretty damn useful before they nerfed bears HP for sarth 3d tanking.
