Ret Paladin ChangesFollow

Hey just want to hear a few suggestions or what you have done with your ret pallies since the patch..

As you are aware our seal dmg has been increased quite considerably..

My pally currntly is on 3.2k AP 30% crit and 444 haste rating. Giving a 2.89 sec swing...

I want to know is it worth going more haste or more crit or more AP.. Seeing as every melee attack gets a Seal of blood proc
is it worth geting a **** ton of haste to get in as many swings and seal procs as possible or would it be better to get harder
hits but less off with more AP stacked.. Or More crit?

Any idea's?

I don't know as I have not played Ret since the patch but I was curious about how the seal change is affecting Rets. Are faster weapons and haste coming into vogue? Or would the slow wepon just seal harder on each swing making overall DPS of the weapon the deciding factor? Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Not from what I've seen. We still prefer big slow weapons to maximize the damage from our specials. The biggest change I've seen to ret mechanics in this patch is the importance of HIT is back.

Blizzard has attempted to make haste more desirable to us, and they've succeeded to a certain extent since they've shifted a lot of SoB's damage from the Judgement aspect to the actual Seal itself. However, we still want a slower weapon (which usually results in higher average damage) and haste is still not as good as strength, meaning we don't want to be gemming for it or anything like that.

It's now important for Ret to get hit capped, and after that you want to just go like before and focus on strength. Expertise is also better now than more of our damage comes from the seal damage, which means it's more important that we don't get dodged and/or parried with our other skills like Crusader Strike and Divine Storm. You still don't want to gem for Expertise, but try to get it through gear.

Hit (until cap) > Str > Expertise > Crit/Haste

Yeah i just dropped a few of my haste gems and only lost around .01 off my weapon swing but gained around 80 AP.. I think you don't really need much more than 400 haste (17%)ish, as you only get a percentage off your weapon speed.. So Really the slower the swing the more your going to benefit from haste rating..

Hit's always been important for ret as well as expertise..

Each swing especially now, is potentially 6k+, with 4k+ white hits and around 2k+ seal dmg, so each miss or dodge/parry is making you miss out on alot of dmg.

I've also changed rotations around now starting off with a crusader strike then divine storm instead of a judgement cause they're only criting for around 4k, with no extra seal dmg...

Been getting bigger crits with exorcism that judgements as well, though have the 20% increased damage glyph to help that.

Would be good to see some other ret pallies too just to check out thier specs and gems and what not..

i'm still openning with Judgement because its a ranged attack and you get the two debuffs. i'll sometimes use Exorcism while running in, making sure tank has already tapped the mob though. this leaves the melee abilities ripe for use when i get in range.

but after the openner, Judgement can be prioritized as next to last since the debuffs last longer than the spell CD. however, the less you use Judgement, the less mana regen for you and your homies(which hasn't been an issue at all since the patch).

as far as gemming and stats:
you should have 3 or 4 gems

red: Bold Scarlet Ruby
blue: Sovereign Twilight Opal
yellow: Fierce Monarch Topaz or Inscribed Monarch Topaz (typically Crit will be better in most situations)

if you need a little extra +Hit, get it from Icewalker rather than a gem. if you need alot of extra +Hit, use your Yellow gem slots.

Before 3.1, I ran with around 6 Expertise or so (whatever I got from gear) and ended up switching out a lot of hit pieces when I got upgrades, to the point where I was running with <150 hit just before the patch dropped. It didn't matter too much as most of our damage came from our judgements, so stacking str was the best thing to do. Hit and Expertise were not always important for Ret, they were always just okay and it was nice if you got it, but you would not gem for them or use a hit trinket (if you don't have the BiS gear). But now, you would gem for hit until you get to cap.

Like with tommyguns, I still tend to start off with a judgement just cause it has a longer range than CS or DS... occasionally I'll start off with an Exo if I'm feeling frisky and know the tank has aggro. But the priority of our moves in terms of FCFS has changed quite a bit from before the patch.
